Pregnant after IF

CVS or Amnio - Advice?

Hi Ladies -
I wanted to seek some advice ...
My doctor is recommending basically all non-invasive genetic testing as I'm 38 and previously had an unviable pregnancy that turned out to be because of a chromosomal abnormality (Trysomy 16).  So, I did the blood work for the Counsyl testing already.  I will do bloodwork for the MaterniT21 in 2 weeks and I'm scheduled for a Nuchal scan U/S in 3 weeks.
I feel like despite those non-invasive tests, I just won't rest easy without doing CVS or Amnio.  My RE recommended CVS and my OB recommended Amnio.  What opinions do you all have? Any advice?
Thank you!!!
Me - 38
DH - 41

IVF #1 -3d transfer of 3 embryos.  BFP.  Unviable HB at 6 weeks.  D&C at 8.5 weeks.
IVF #2 -5d transfer of 2 blasts. BFP. Low Beta HCG - did 5 beta tests over 10 days - RE concerned ectopic.  1st U/S HB 114! 2nd U/S HB 150! Graduated from RE 7 weeks 5 days (11/5).  First OB appt 8 weeks 4 days (11/11) - HB 170 and measuring exactly on schedule.  Phew.

  • I'm 39. I did MaterniT21 and NT scan. I think unless something comes up I wouldn't do more tests. I had to do amnio at 20 weeks after we found out my baby has spina bifida. (They wanted to check for other issues, there were none).  The tests you are doing will uncover many issues, including trisomies.
One other thing is insurance may not cover additional testing if initial testing comes back OK.

  • We are in a similar situation. I am 42, and have gone through four losses, at least one of which was a trisomy (Trisomy 4). After talking to two genetic counselors, we opted to have a CVS or Amnio done. We had a really tough time deciding between them, but ultimately decided on amnio. The miscarriage rate is lower (although it's pretty low with CVS too), and more stuff can be identified with amnio. But finding out earlier with CVS really swayed us that way at first. I have my amnio next week (11/22), and will be really glad to be done with it! Good luck on your decision, and with the test you choose!

  • Trisomy 16 is the most common trisomy in miscarriage tissue. However, the non invasive tests will not pick up on this (they only test for 13, 18, 21, X and Y. The advantage of CVS is that you can have it done much earlier than an amnio. However, if you have an abnormal CVS generally they will want you to have a follow up amnio. This is because sometimes the chromosome abnormality is in the placenta and not the baby. Usually trisomies are random events related to age and aren't hereditary. I would do whatever gives you the peace of mind you need.

  • I am 36 and I had the Harmony 21 test. They tried to do the CVS, but my doc made a mistake and poked my cervix and I had some really heavy bleeding and almost lost the baby. I would stick to the genetic testing if I was you and see what the results say. If there is a reason for alarm, I will then take the CVS. Just my opinion. My cvs failed and it was a lot of pain for nothing.

    Best of luck!
