Soft Spots...

How is your baby's soft spot? Is it closed yet? Close to closing? Or open?

I ask this because Connor's soft spot is about the width of a pencil eraser. I brought this up with the pediatrician, she informed me he was born with a larger than normal soft spot, but since he was hitting milestones she didn't worry about it. She also said that since his head is off the charts in size, it could close and there should be no worry. It has gone from being rather big to this close to closing really fast, which was why I was worried. Of course, to scare myself even further and looked on dr. Google about soft spots closing before age 1. (shouldn't have).

I am just wondering how other babies are.

  • Brayden's is pretty much closing but I made absolutely sure not to goggle it, my husband did though lol. He has a pediatrician appt tomorrow & I was going to ask about it.

  • Ava still has a decent sized soft spot and touching it completely freaks me out. @Clandestinex - we should start a big headed baby club. Ava is 25% in height and weight and 75% for her head. Poor girl.
  • Miles' is barely noticeable....and I didn't think a thing about it until now. We were just at the pediatrician yesterday and don't go again until January. Hmm. He also has an off the charts big noggin, so we'll join the club!

  • I can definitely see my DD's- she is such a baldie and it has closed a lot but is still partially open and i can see her pulse in it- creepy. She wants to join the big headed baby club too! Her head is actually only 50th percentile but her weight is only 5-10th percentile so her head looks like the top of a tootsie pop and her body is the skinny, tall stick. Lol.

I don't know how I keep managing to reply twice. Durrrr
  • I didn't feel anything but I had trouble with all of his hair.  I'm definitely going to ask next week at his doctors appointment.

  • DDs soft spots freak me out IDK why. I kissed the top of her head when she was a newborn and kissed her soft spot and literally freaked me out. The pedi said she could have her SS until she's 2 yo.

I'll join.  Alexander is in the 90th for his head (we finally got back on the chart)

I'll join as well, Brayden is in the 85th percentile. I had to cut a shirt last week to get off of his head lol

Lol, we shall be dubbed fellowship of the noggin.

@Cece2682 - I touch it to see, the soft spot doesn't scare me that much.. I kinda find it fascinating. The soft spot can tell a lot about a baby (coupled with milestone progression and height and weight comparison). It is kinda cool.

  • I was told that they usually do not totally close until 18 months of age. Some close as early as 9-12 months of age. Reason being because of the head growing and growth plates and such. The soft spot can also be an indicator if a baby is dehydrated ie--sunken in. And of course during childbirth, so that the skull can compress allowing it to come through the birth canal.

This is true, the doctor said his could be closed at 6 months and she would watch it but not be worried about it too much because of his head size. It just freaked me out at first when it went from the size of a quarter to the size of an eraser in about a month and half.
