Re: Need help weaning!

  • It sounds like she is nursing for comfort.  I slowly weaned Albert from night nursing by shortening our sessions a bit every night until I just didn't offer any more and only rocked him when he woke up.  If you're having trouble with your milk expressing when you go in, it helps to have someone else go in and rock her.  It wasn't long before he wasn't nursing at night at all.

Afterwards, I was having so much trouble getting him to sleep, especially at bed time, that I sleep trained him.  You might read up on Ferber's sleep training (aka the "cry it out" method).  He goes down brilliantly now for both naps and bed time.

As for weaning during the daytime, I dropped one session over a course every couple of weeks until now we are down to him only nursing in the morning.

Hope this helps.  Weaning slowly is much better than weaning cold turkey, but you have to do what you have to do.

  • I totally get you. There are days I just want to run away and lock up my tata's so they're never nursed from again. Other days are better and I just push through. LO wants nothing to do with DH at night, so no matter what if she's up, so am I.

I've been given suggestions about a sippy of water instead of nursing during motn, then over time they stop waking up for that. We are down to only one 3-4am session, and usually one around 6 when she wakes up, one in the afternoon and one before bed.

I guess I can't really give much advice, but I completely understand. You aren't the only one, even after all this time. Possibly your LO is teething?

Personally I'm just cutting out one session at a time, keeping the morning and bedtime for last. I will probably be trying the sippy of water when that time comes for us.

    Hang in there!
