Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Newborn or 3months clothes @ birth

Hi mamas! Today was my EDD but baby girl is terribly cozy and not showing any signs of coming on her own so I have an induction scheduled for this coming Saturday. Just trying to get the right clothes ready, and was wondering if any of you skipped right to 3 months clothes or if you wore newborn clothes. If you used newborns, how long did LO wear them before before going to 3months, if you went right to 3months size how big was your babe at birth? DH and I we're both large babies at birth, but my dr is guesting our LO will be 7.5-8lbs.

I know clothes are probably the last thing I should be worried about, but as a FTM I'm so anxious about everything I don't have control over, her closet is one of the few things I can try to have ready. :/

Thanks in advance for the advise and I look forward to joining the 0-3mongh club next week!

LO was 8lb 11oz and 21 inches. We wore some newborn clothes but his torso was so long that a lot of them were tight in the crotch and I always felt like I was crushing his nuts. So we wore a couple newborn things but mostly used 0-3 month clothes.

Now at 12 weeks he is wearing 6-9 month clothes again because of the tightness due his torso length.

Edit to add: good luck hope it goes well for you!

  • LO was 7lbs 13oz, 21 inches. She came home in a newborn sleeper and wore newborn outfits for the first 3 weeks.

  • My DS was 7 lbs 4 oz and wore newborn clothes for 5 weeks. I would get some newborn stuff just to be safe.
  • My lo was born 8lbs 3oz, 20.5" long and was back at her birth weight at 1 week old. She wore nb for the first 3 weeks. Lo is now 6 weeks, 11.5lbs and wearing 3 months (0-3 months is very snug/small on her).
  • LO was 7lbs 13oz at birth and at almost 3 weeks is still wearing most newborn clothes. The pajamas are a little on the tight side because of overall length (Carter's brand), bit I've found most 0-3 pajamas are way too big. We finally bought a pack of 3 pajamas that are Babies R Us brand and although they are a little big, they are smaller than most 0-3 clothes. I would imagine I will get at least another week out of the newborn onesies and pants we have.

  • LO was born 7.1 oz 20 inches and wore newborn clothes for 5.5 weeks.
  • We thought DS would be a big baby because DH and I were so big plus he always measured ahead on u/s. However he was 8 lbs 5 oz and only 19.5 in. We had no newborn stuff and had to rush out the day after he came home for aome clothes. He was in them for about 5 weeks. He was over 10 lbs and 21.5 in at 1 month. Some of the 0-3 are getting snug now.

  • My LO was 7lbs 5oz and 20 1/4 in when she was born. She wore all newborn clothes for the first 4 weeks. She can still wear newborn onsies but the sleepers and pants don't fit anymore so she is now in 0-3/3 months at 5 1/2 weeks

My husband and I were 8 lbs at birth but this LO was measuring big the whole pregnancy.  After having lots of U/S, the doctors were predicting an 11 lb baby!  So with that in mind, we didn't buy any newborn outfits and luckily no one purchased items in that range either.

Our boy was delivered one week early via c-section and was 10 lbs 15 oz and measured 22.5 in.  So no newborn items for us!  He is now almost 2 months, weighs over 13 lbs and is 24 in long.  Within the last 1-2 weeks we've been transitioning from the 0-3 mth to the 3-6 mth items.  (Obviously it all depends on brand - some run small while others are roomy enough in length).

  • I think MOST babies will be in newborn for at least a few weeks.  There are obviously exceptions but unless you've been told you're having a really big baby, I'd pick up a few things.  Of course, they can always wear stuff that's too big but they can be REALLY big :)

  • LO came out 9lb 5oz 22 inches. She wore nb (they were snug) for about a week. Mostly because they were cute and the tags were already off. But she was more comfortable in 0-3
  • Our LO was 7 lbs 13 oz at birth and I brought him home in NB clothes. (I'd brought some NB and some 0-3 mos because I wasn't sure what would fit.)

He's 8 lbs 3 oz now and he's just now starting to outgrow some of his smaller NB sleepers. But we have NB sleepers that vary (after washing/drying) by literally 3-4" in length. It a crapshoot!

I had so few NB clothes (because everyone says not to buy them) that I had to go to the store and grab about 3-4 more NB sleepers (oh bummer, right?!) just so we had something for him to change into when he pees all over himself.

  • Hi Ninjamama! My little one was 9 lbs. 10 oz. and skipped straight to 3 months. Except for his feet. He can still wear newborn socks/booties.

  • And we've found that the Gerber brand tends to run really small. (just check out the pic I posted on our month board of Moose in a Gerber shirt. It's like a bikini on him.)

  • Our LO was 6.9 and 19 inches when she was born. Newborn clothes were huge on her. She wore premie sleepers and still can. She's a month old and some of her newborn stuff is still big. She's 8.8 now.
  • At 38w she was 6.8 and dropped to 5.11  She went home in preemie clothes. We are just now moving up to 0-3 month clothes and she's 10 lbs.

  • Thank you so much!! A lot of the clothes I have are carters brand which are "newborn" and "3 months" I hope not to sound like a complete idiot, but when you ladies say "0-3" does that mean 3months in carters clothes? Or is there a middle size in another brand I should stock up on?
  • LO weighed 8lb 6oz and wore NB for about a week.  She is now about 13lbs and I'll be moving her into 3-6 within the week.

@Ninjamama86, not a dumb question at all!  Brands list them differently but generally 0-3 months = 3 months, 3 - 6 months = 6 months, etc.

You can double check on the tags for the weight they are meant to clothe.  So for instance, I have a Carter's outfit that is "3 months" for 8-12.5 lbs, a Gerber "0-3 months" that is for 8-12 lbs, an Old Navy outfit that is "0-3 months" for 7-12 lbs, and a Macy's First Impressions outfit "0-3 months" that is up to 12 lbs.

So it's all just approximate really :)

  • DD was 9lb1oz and down to 8lb5oz when we left the hospital. She was in NB (carters) for the first 6 weeks. We just moved up to the 3mo (carters) clothes this week at 11.5lbs.

    Good luck on Saturday!
  • My LO was 7lbs 9oz and newborn clothes are still big on her. I figure she can probably wear this size for the next month at least.
  • DS was 10#2oz... He never wore newborn anything. Even diapers. He wore 3 mo until 4 weeks, and has been in 6 months since then. He's 10 weeks now and about to go to 9 month... He's a chunker.

  • Both of my girls wore NB clothes for at least 2 months. 0-3m were dangerously large.

Both of my girls were estimated to be over 8 1/2 pounds. One was just under 7 lbs, the other just over. I wouldn't put much faith in the weight estimate.

  • Our two-week baby (born 6lbs, 1 oz, now 6lbs, 5 oz) has been mostly in newborn things, at least as far as shirts and onesies and footie sleepers.  But we've also had her in 0-3 gowns during the day.  We roll up the sleeves and it doesn't matter that the rest of it is a bit big.

  • My son is now 6 wks old and I got a ton of NB clothes and used them once. He went through a growth spurt when he was 2 weeks old and can longer fit in them. He how wears 0-3 months/ 3 month clothing.
  • We brought both NB and 3 month outfits to the hospital, but none of his NB clothes fit. He was 9 lbs. 6 oz. and 21 inches long. I knew he was expected to be a big baby since our 20 week scan so we didn't have any NB clothes to begin with except those that were given as gifts.

Agree with PPs about Gerber clothes running extremely small; DS is 2 weeks old and wearing Gerber onesies that say 3 - 9 mos. It would be an awfully scrawny 9 month-old that would be able to fit into those.
  • LO was born at 36 weeks, 1 day, and his birth weight was 6 pounds, 12 ounces. He worn newborn clothes for about 3 weeks or so then switched to 0-3 months, which were still slightly big on him at that point.
  • My daughter was 7lbs4oz when she was born and 21inches long, she is now 7 1/2 weeks old and still wearing some newborn clothes. Her newborn jammies are too small but she is still wearing newborn sized onesies.
  • LO was 6 lb 13 oz and is just growing out of her NB clothes at 6 weeks and 10 lbs. Her 0-3 are still pretty big on her, so I'd say we're between sizes right now.

  • Jake was in newborn for the first 4 weeks or so.  He was 3.5 weeks early.  6lb 3 oz  He is long, so they quickly became too short in the stride.  I would just keep a few newborn onsies at first to see how LO grows.  They are easy to wash and swap out.  I would say the majority of the footed pj's, clothes, etc... probably need to be 0-3.  Jake is now 12 weeks, and he is in 3-6 due to his length.
