3rd Trimester

Have any of you been having contractions that start then stop?

I'm 38 weeks, 5 days pregnant..and at 4 AM this morning I woke up to a contraction. It was a real one, not the BH I've had occasionally.. this was a wave of pain that shot from my lower back to my abdominal area all while tightening. More began to come, and they lasted until 7AM this morning, and were between 6-10 minutes apart, usually lasting between 35 seconds and 1 minute. After that they just tapered off! I called my midwife and she said they'll probably come back early afternoon, but so far nothing. This is my second child and with my first my water broke and that was that! Every so often I will feel another, pretty strong one come and then go. Is this happening to anyone else?

  • Normal.  I was in pre-labor with DS2 for weeks.  Contractions that got stronger and closer together and then just stopped.  It's infuriating :)

  • yup, completely frustrating.  mine will be regular (6min) and fairly intense for up to 3 hours, then nada.

  • Me too! Two different times I woke up with painful contractions 5-8min apart for hours. Then they stopped. My dr called it flirting with labor. Irritating!!

  • I've been feeling this for at least a week now. I'm getting anxious.
  • Sounds like pre-labor. I did that for a couple of days before going into real labor with DS2. Annoying for sure, but means your body is getting ready for the main event!

  • Yup, I've been having this and it's very frustrating. Sunday I started having contractions at 8:30pm and by 10 they were 2 min apart and hurt. They continued like that until 4:30 and then just stopped. The worst thing? At my appt Monday there was NO progression whatsoever from the week before in my cervix.

  • Yep. With DS I had "fake out" contractions at night that petered out. That started at 37 weeks & went all the way to 41 weeks. It blows!

Drink lots of water, keep your sugar/protein levels even & be patient!

  • This may be a silly question but if the contractions lasted consistently for hours... How did you know if you should go to L&D or if they were just "flirting" or pre-labor?
  • Yup. I hadn't experienced any of these until this week (I'm 39 weeks now). I started having contractions just before 10pm Sunday night, they were strong but not painful. They moved from being 10min apart to being 2 min apart and lasting from 30sec to a minute (actually they were alternating length every other contraction, 30sec, 1 min, 30 sec, etc. I thought that was interesting). They stayed like until about 1am then I went to sleep and I woke up Through the night and the next morning still having contractions about 5 min apart. They continued through the day slowly getting farther apart and then stopping by mid afternoon. I think all total it was around 14 hours of consistent contractions that awarded me with an additional 1cm dilation. Yay me.

  • I personally wanted to hold off on going to the hospital until I was sure the contractions were getting stronger..but what was happening was odd because I'd have a good strong contraction, and then the next one would be short and weaker. Then I'd get another strong one..so until I was sure they were all strong and lasting around a minute long, and getting closer together (some would be close together and then I wouldn't have another for 10-15 minutes), I didn't want to go to L&D.

  • Went to the Dr. today and it looks like those contractions did some work! I'm at 4 centimeters and my midwife said the next set I can go to the hospital and they can break my water. So I suppose I'll be in L&D soon!

  • Yes had this happen yesterday, I even called the doctor to see when I should come in (having a c-section due to her being breech/having a previous c-section) and they said when they got to 3-5min and they were painful. They got to around 5-7min apart and were about 1min in duration. After about 2hrs of that they started to space out more again. Today I am back to my normal BH contractions. I am ok with them stopping last night, I am not too eager to have her before 38wks and rather her wait till after the weekend if its possible.

You can go by the 5-1-1 rule. Contractions 5 min apart, lasting 1 minute for 1 hour.

The contractions should be regular , like pp said. 5-1-1 rule, and typically you want to labor at home as long as you can to avoid going to the hospital and them not admitting you sending you back home. My dr said wait until I'm cursing my husband and holding onto the chair to get through them..but also take into account the distance you have to go!!
  • Update: had my baby all natural today. After being 4 cm for a week I woke up this morning feeling off. By 9 am I was feeling crampy, and being that we had an hour drive to the hospital we left and were there by 10:30. I was 6 cm when I got there and my midwife broke my water when I hit 8 cm shortly after. My son was born at 1:13! I'm glad those contractions the previous week helped me out, because this labor and delivery went quickly! I'll post my birth story in the natural birth section in a day or two.
