August 2013 Moms

Santa?

For those of us who don't have any other kids besides our August babies, this is way too soon to ask, but I'm asking more for curiosity. A friend and I were talking about how the whole Santa thing worked at our houses as kids and I realized how different our experiences were. In my house Santa brought most of our gifts and then we got a couple marked from Mom and Dad. My friend said her parents told her Santa only has room for one gift on his sleigh since he has so many kids to take presents to, so her biggest gift always came from Santa and everything else was from her parents. What were your Christmas morning experiences growing up? BTDT moms-how do you handle this?

Re: Santa?

  • We got our big gifts from Santa as well as a couple other nice gifts.y parents took care of what we needed and smaller nice gifts (clothes etc).

With DD we probably will do 60/40 Santa / mom and dad with the big gift coming from Santa

  • For us just what we get in our stockings comes from Santa.

  • In HS my neighbor would pay me a couple bucks to run around his house with sleigh bells around his kids' bedtime.

    Cute idea!!
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • The presents wrapped under the tree were from mom and dad.  Santa's presents were unwrapped and assembled in a pile for each of us kids and he would also stuff our stockings.  Usually Santa would bring us the toys and mom and dad would get us clothes.  I remember growing up I thought it was so weird when I would hear about Santa bringing someone clothes lol.

  • @RivieraBound-that's kind of what I'm getting at! Kids talk to each other and wonder why Santa does one thing for them and another for other kids. I remember when questioning why I saw so many Santa Clauses in December and they looked so different my parents told me the mall Santas were just helpers because the real one is so busy, and when friends insisted a man dressed up in the parade was the real one I got all upset haha They would tell the bearded man in the department store what they wanted whereas my mom and dad just had us leave our list with the cookies.
  • Everything was wrapped and from Santa. As we got older, I knew better but my little brother still believed so stuff still said Santa till he no longer believed, then it was all mom

As for LO, we will probably do both parents and Santa

  • All gifts on Christmas Day are from Santa. I started a tradition with my kids where they get new PJs and a book from mom & dad on Christmas Eve. I write a little something on the inside of the book, so they will be able to read it someday. Yeah Santa gets most of the credit!
  • I plan to do the PJ,s and also an ornament a year

  • Mom got us an ornament every year, Dad got us some kind of electronic. Santa did the rest- including the stocking.

This is how it worked in my house when I was growing up. H and I will probably do the same.

This, except for we never got clothes as gifts until we were old enough to ask for them.

  • Santa filled our stockings and left a few other gifts (unwrapped) around the stocking as well. All the other gifts were from mom and dad. I plan to do this for LO as well.

  • Interesting. I guess I never thought about this.  ALL our presents said "Santa" growing up.  I'll have to ask DH!
  • Big gifts plus a few others from us. Rest from Santa.

  • My parents did a stocking and we got a board game from Santa. We also got new pjs Christmas Eve night.
  • We never believed in Santa. I always knew he was a fake ;)

My nephew always spends Christmas at my house. H has been dressing up as Santa and making his get away just as DN gets up for 5 years :) My mom took a picture last year of Santa leaving. Nephew tells everyone about how he almost caught him. Big gifts from aunty and uncle, stocking, small things from Santa.

That is so adorable. I may have convince dh to so this when S gets older.
Growing up we got most of our toys from Santa and only a few from mom. They were always opened and displayed in piles for each kid around the tree and the stockings were filled. Dh's experience was completely different. They only got one gift from Santa it was always wrapped. Even when He was older they still only got one or two gifts at Christmas. It just wasn't a big deal for them. In our family it's huge. He's pretty much adopted my "big holiday " ways.

  • The majority of our gifts were from Santa...stockings included...about a handful from parents. When we were older and knew Santa didn't exist then the majority was from parents and sibs and family...stockings were still from "Santa" to keep it fun

There's no such thing as Santa??? :p
Santa did the stockings, there would also usually be a gift unwrapped infront of the tree OR you got the one thing you really wanted from him wrapped. The others were from my parents as well as mrs. Claus, the elves, Rudolph and the reindeers, or frosty

As for DS, we have done the same so far. He's 3 this Christmas so is only starting to really understand now. Santa will do the stockings and the rest will be like i explained above. We spent the last 2 Xmas mornings at my parents and my mom had everything setup like Santa was there for him

  • Growing up I want to say it was 50/50 as far as presents from santa vs my parents.  I wrote letters to santa with my Christmas list and those would be the presents that would come from him, then my parents would get my some surprises.  I will probably do something similar with LO.

On a side note, I saw this adorable thing on pinterest where you save your child's christmas list by putting it in a clear ornament every year.  Definitely want to try that...

  • We got one gift from mom and dad, one gift plus a stocking from Santa and then we all bought each other gifts. My parents used to give us each 20 bucks to do our Christmas shopping at the dollar store. My favorite was to buy presents for my family. I like this idea if we give DD siblings.

At SOs house the kids have santa come to their parents house and grandmas house which i think is a bit much, my nephews are spoiled rotten and used to open presents without reading who they were for and then would be confused and pissed if they got girl clothes or a grown up book on accident.

I want to make the emphasis on giving and celebrating special traditions like making cookies and stuff. I do like the pajamas and book idea. I used to love getting new pajamas for christmas
  • Yeah. We didnt really do santa. My parents just didnt do anything with it. I always kinda knew that what was in my stoxking was from my parents.

Though our christmas thing is every yeat, everyone gets an ornament from my grandparents. The little kids get footie jamies and an ornament. But other then that christmas is just go to church eat and open gifts.

This. My H grew up in a household where they knew Santa wasn't real. We plan to do the same regarding Christmas. We will make the holiday special by creating other traditions and centering it around family rather than Santa.
