Pregnant after 35

NT appointment / first perinatologist visit

I have my NT scan and my first visit with my perinatologist tomorrow.    They just called to confirm and informed me of the schedule of events:
9:15 - consultation.
10:15 - meet with Dr.
10:45 - NT scan.

Does that seem reasonable?  I had no idea it would take so long.  We've already had a pre-pregnancy meeting with their geneticist and the perinatologist, so I have no idea why we need a 1 hour consultation tomorrow (they didn't say who it was with).  I guess I need to relax and accept that I'm going to be spending a lot of time at doctor appointments, and will have more tests than a 20 year old, but I haven't told work yet and I'm feeling guilty for so much time away from the office.

Re: NT appointment / first perinatologist visit

  • my experience with peri's is that you don't plan to do much on your freetime that day. If you get in and out quickly, it's a bonus.
I'm curious why your NT is after your Dr, rather than vice-versa. My u/s's are typically before my dr consult, of course most of the time I"m still in the u/s room and he comes in to go over whatever the u/s showed,, sometimes a quick repeat scan of an area that may have been a little trouble for the tech.

  • I was going to ask the same question...whenever I have an ultrasound it's always scheduled first, then I meet with my dr after when he's had a chance to look at the results. That all seems backwards to me. If I were you that's the part I'd be questioning!

As far as time, I agree that you can plan on long appts as it just seems to be the way it goes. Just remember it's good they're being thorough- you wouldn't want them to rush it and miss anything.

  • Both times I had my NT scans at the PERI office because that is what my practice does.  Both times I never even met with the Dr before hand.  I went in, had my scan done with the US tech and then the Dr came in and basically repeated what the US tech did but in a shorter time span.  I was told everything looked good and was sent off to meet the nurse to get bloodwork and was on my way.  I was not considered high risk with either pregnancies so maybe that is the difference?

  • Thanks ladies.   I do agree that thoroughness of the doctors is a great thing!   I just get frustrated with sitting & waiting.   I think it is all preparing me for when the baby gets here and time is no longer my own. :)

Speaking of baby, all was well at the NT scan.  I'll never get tired of seeing him wiggling in there.   The reason for the consult was that they had a new genetic counselor that wanted to review the files with us.  And, the receptionist just relayed the schedule to me incorrectly because we did meet with the Dr. last.
