Respite Care?

DS is on a waiting list for both the Brain Injury Waiver and Ill & Handicapped Waiver. I am looking forward to getting respite care since our families work and are usually unable to watch DS. I'm thinking very far off, but I'm curious about what families do with multiple kids. Say I want to go to the dentist, do you use the respite provider and an additional care provider for your typical kids? Can you share experiences with your respite providers? Do they tend to be as qualified as your child needs? Do you ever have anyone you just don't mesh with? Typical first time mom fears - leaving my kid with a stranger :)

Re: Respite Care?

  • I'm Canadian, so our system is probably very different. We have a contract where we can choose to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed 10 an hour. My friends with 2 kiddos usually pay 12 and get 10 back for two kids. Or you can go with an agency who directly bills so no out of pocket. However, they will only cover the child in the contract. Most families I know put less hours in their contracts but stipulate for 2 kids. Our system is pretty good and most caseworkers know two different people watching two kids at the same time doesn't always work.

  • Thanks for the replies! I'll have to go with the agency until we have another baby, which will be no time soon, but I'm such a planner. It's so helpful to know what they allow though.
  • DS2 gets respite through the military. We had to interview and answer questions to find out how many hours per month we qualified for and he was put at a certain level of care (level of care tells you what level nurse you qualified for - it is anywhere from CNA to RN; we were assigned LPN level care). Our services go through a national service who then contacts out to local companies. We interviewed with various LPNs through the local company, picked one we felt comfortable with, and then set a schedule with her.  As for who watches DS1 (neurotypical), I have to provide a separate caretaker (which I have to pay for). So if DH and I went out on a date, respite worker would watch DS2 and a babysitter would watch DS1.
