1st Trimester

CVS Testing

I am 10w2d and my next appointment is scheduled for Monday, 11/18. I will be going in for my checkup but my MW is also stating this is when they would do the CVS test.

My DH and I have talked and agreed we do not want any "extra" testing done if not necessary. We are still debating on doing it.

Has anyone decided if they will do this or not?

Re: CVS Testing

  • Are you at high risk for genetic abnormities? Normally I don't believe you would do this invasive test "just because." Typically you are offered non invasive screening first, then the cvs test if there is reason for it.

  • I am not high risk for genetic abnormilities, but have a few high risk with other issues.

To be completely honest,  I was getting confused on what will take place at my next appointment and started to attempt researching (which obviously lead me to CVS).

I called the MW office and waiting for a call back, but I would like to be more prepared for my appointments than I feel that I am.

    Thanks for responding.

  • Because of the risk of complications, it's rare that a CVS would be done at 10 weeks without a high risk for problems, which is generally uncovered during other testing or through family history.

A CVS is also often, although not always, performed at a special testing facility.  Miscarriage rates drop when the test is performed by providers who specialize in the test.

    Good luck with your appointments!
  • CVS would never be done by your midwife or OB/Gyn.  That would only be with an MFM.

...so you don't remember your doctor saying CVS, you're just guessing CVS based on your own googling?

It would be very unusual to give you this test for no reason. It's risky and kind of a big deal. Could they have talked to you about NT testing?

Shamefully, yes. She never said an actual test name. My DH doesnt remember her ever saying an actual test name either. When I searched for testing done at 10-11 weeks, CVS came up.

I appreciate the feedback. I'm still waiting to hear back from the office, but from my further research and questions to others NT testing is looking like the correct testing that will be done (relieved). :)

  • I did a first screen blood test accompanied with an U/S because I'm not a spring chicken anymore and this is with a completely different father than my first 3. We chose this because we wanted more time to "digest" a positive result and we would have the option to test again in the 2nd trimester. If everything comes back negative, I don't see a need to test. Call your OB's office and ask what they typically do at your next appointment so you can be better prepared/informed. I promise it's worth the phone call than to worry yourself with it now.
  • Thanks, @Shellbell9482.

I did call and was waiting for an answer. I continued to research as well as ask advice on here.

The office didn't call me back until late yesterday, so it helped to get feedback while I waited. They let me know what to expect come my next appointment.
