Really long road trip... WWYD?

Reposted from July 2013. Hi ladies. I'm a long time lurker - sorry if this question has been asked before. DD is 16 weeks old. One of my dear friends moved 10 hours away and another friend is driving to see her, staying 3 nights, and driving home. I really want to go with her and bring my lo, but I'm not sure if this is a selfish, terrible idea. DD is 50/50 in the car seat - sometimes she's great and falls asleep easily. Sometimes she is miserable and wants to make sure everyone else is too. DH supports my decision either way but I'm torn and scared I'm going to feel like a terrible mom if she is unhappy the whole time. I EBF in case that matters. What would you do?

  • I wouldn't do it but that's because we just had a rough trip with our lo. Our 3 hour trip took. 5.5 hours. He decided he didn't want to be in his carseat so we kept having to stop. The minute we took him out he was fine but as soon as we started again he would be screaming. I was with my husband and it was extremely stressful and I would have been much more stressed if I had been with a friend.

  • I've done lots of driving with my LO, back and forth from our cottage since he was 1.5 weeks old (2.5-3 hours one way) and took a 10 day road trip when he was 3 months old. I personally wouldn't put my LO, even at 5 months old now, in a car seat for 10 hours, even with lots of stops. At that age, I really feel like they need to move about and stretch- that's exactly why they are fussy in the car seat!  I realize you are short on time but doing the 10 hours over 2 days would be WAY better. Unless you do the driving at night and can be assured he will sleep the whole way. Lots of people do that. My LO would never have it, at night he wants to be in his bed.

We always timing our driving for nap-time and made the stops for feeding/diapers and stretching/playing when he woke. He did awesome. If I were you I'd do it over 2 days if possible. If he's 50/50 in the car seat like you said, the 10 hours is not going to be too fun for you.... and it might take more like 15+!!!   And time the bulk of the driving for during his less fussiest period. My LO is always more easy going in the morning. When we go away, we often wake him up early, feed him and hit the road and that usually works well for us. But every baby is different. Good luck.

  • We moved across the country when DD was about 3 months old. I expected it to be horrible but she was so good! I know that that may not always be the case, but thought I would give you a sliver of hope! ;)

  • We're doing a 12 hour road trip for Thanksgiving, we plan on breaking the trip up into two parts each way so that way our LO only has 6 hours of carseat time a day.  He's also 50/50 in the carseat but I really want him to see my hometown lol.
