I meant each to stand alone as a first name. I had a great aunt V (veronica). Only reason why I'm considering it. DD's name is Claire. I also stumbled across Emmeline (Emma-leen). What's everyone's thought on Emmeline?
Emmeline is just okay for me. I thought it was so adorable and charming when I first heard it, but now it just feels like another way to get to the NN Emmy. Still a cute name, just doesn't do much for me.
Love both Vera & Veronica. Not an Emmeline fan, but I do prefer the pronunciation that you listed above.
Yes! Forgot to mention that. The /leen/ pronunciation is my favorite. The /line/ one sounds like "eh malign" to me, and /lin/ just seems like it'd get confused with Evelyn and sounds smooshy.
Vera -- nms, makes me think of a blue-haired granny.
Veronica -- sort of cute.
Emmeline -- people will not naturally pronounce it as you want it to be pronounced. I think of this name as Emma-lynn or Emma-line. No one is going to read line as leen.
I adore Vera and will never forgive DH for vetoing it. Love Veronica. Emmeline is awful and I'm surprised it's a contender alongside your lovely V names.
I like Emmeline pronounced Emma-line. I don't understand where the Emma-leen pronounciation comes from.
The same place all pronunciation differences come from---different languages and dialects.
Emmeline came to the English language by way of the Normans, who were French. In the French language, "ine" doesn't equal /ine/ as in "line." It's the same reason Josephine is pronounced with an /een/ instead of /ine/.
The English language takes pronunciations from other languages all the time, and not just for names. It's really not that weird.
I love Vera. My DH wants this so badly for a little girl, it is practically the only name he loves but it will never be. Our last name is one syllable starting with R and it just doesn't sound good.
I also like Verity though. Good possibility we could go with this one day and call her Birdie.
I have never liked Veronica. I hate the nickname Ronnie. Veronica reminds me of the old comic strip and it sounds so very valley girl to me. But, I would love to meet a little Veronica that was not my own child lol same with Victoria. NMS but a fine name for someone elses kid.
Unless you happen to live in France, Emmaline will mostly be pronounced Emma-line or Emma-lynn just like Madeleine/Madeline is usually mispronounced. You will have to correct practically everyone which some people would mind doing. It is a cute name though. I pronounce it Emma-line like Madeline should be.
Re: Thoughts on Vera/Veronica?
I am not a fan of Veronica or Emmaline.

Veronica-- Love! So glamorous and pretty.
Vera-- like a lot, but for some reason dislike as a NN for Veronica (not sure if that is your intention.)
Emmaline- It's pretty, but I would be worried about all of the other 4 trillion Emmas running around.
