Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Whole milk or 2%

Did anyone start out w/ whole milk or 2%

Re: Whole milk or 2%

  • It's whole milk. They need the extra fat in their diet to keep up good brain development. If your kid doesn't tolerate it well good fatty alternatives are goats milk and coconut milk.

  • Yup, whole.
  • I started at about 8 months with 2% milk. My dr. said her 6 month checkup we could switch but I chose to wait. He said children get enough fat in their diets so 2% is fine. I think she is growing great.
  • My dr told me at my 9 month check up that we could switch to 2%. I haven't she is still on formula for a bit longer then we will switch to whole milk like op have said until I talk to my dr again at her 1 yr

  • Our office says from the age of 12 months to 24 months most children should have whole milk.  The only possible exception is in cases where there is a family history of obesity.

To be honest, I would still do whole milk until 24 months regardless of family history (there is no family history for us so it was a non-issue).  But that's my personal opinion.
  • 10 months and we're still nursing! But he refuses breast milk from a bottle so when he's with dad its either formula or a little 2%. He is not big on anything other than breast milk or water
  • At my 9 month check up my pedi recommended offering very small amounts of whole milk (definitely whole milk for the fat). I was surprised she said that because I thought 12 months was the rule, but she said unless there's an intolerance issue 9 months is fine to start.... the idea being to have them totally switched by 12 months. I'm going to continue BFing for as long as I can so I'm in no rush.

She also wanted to make sure he was getting plenty of other dairy products in his diet... full fat yogurt and cheeses. I guess for the fat too? But avocado and coconut milk are great for that too and she didn't say anything about those.
  • We've been doing a little whole milk every once in awhile in addition to formula, and he does fine with it.
  • When we switch, at one year old, she will get whole milk. We did the same with DS.

I started out with 2% around 6-7 months and haven't used anything else. My family doctor, where we take our daughter said children get enough fat in their diets from other sources. I don't think she is starving either. :-) She will be 1 on December 6th.
