  • No lunch meat unless you heat it up first! Listeria grows on it and can cause birth defects, miscarriage, or still born.

  • I eat hot dogs just not all the time. I also eat American cheese from the deli.
I am careful with lunch meat but did eat it at work the other day since there was nothing else. The lunch at work is good and I eat as soon as they put te good out so I know it is not out long.

I have heard you should heat it up but I didn't when I ate it.

  • People also drink alcohol with no problems while pregnant, but it's still a risky choice that I would say isn't worth it.

  • For lunch meat, my doctor gave me the okay with my first child as long as it's from a package (factories that produce the packaged meats are cleaner than supermarket delis) and fresh. Don't eat week old turkey.

  • I say yes to cold deli meat. I also say yes to soft-serve ice cream and yogurt, prepackaged salads, cookie dough, and medium-rare steak.

  • I had a major craving for hot dogs in the beginning before I knew it was an 'iffy' food, and ate several. I just make sure to heat them up after I get them from fast food places in case they were 'improperly stored' as my OB pamphlet says. I have also eaten American cheese - most cheeses, except some gourmet cheeses, tend to be pasteurized and therefore, safe. My mother ate non-heated lunch meat when she was pregnant with all five of us, but with everything there is a risk. I would suggest heating it up, as the doctor will also suggest the same.

Lmfao. I literally ate at subway with my oldest daughter every single day due to cravings. I can assure you she was perfect.

I did the same thing. My son is fine.

  • I eat deli meat semi regularly and I did with my previous pregnancies. Hot dogs? Not sure, I don't eat them. Sliced cheese is fine.

  • I was told eat it :) I smell all my food and deli meat when bad has a strange smell. I do try and limit the intake of deli meat but seriously - when some of us were growing up our moms smoked and we slept in lead base painted cribs - we are fine. Right now I want subs, Sushi and Seafood - not all at once but at some point in the day lol - eat but be mindful

  • All OBs are gonna tell you something different. Before I went to my first appointment I ate a whole bunch of salami with no problem. At my appointment, my Dr. told me to heat up deli meat or get it toasted if you go to Subway or whatever. It's up to you!

  • I'm just passing along information that I was given by medical sources. Most things they say you can't have during pregnancy are probably fine, but I personally don't want to take the risk. I'm lucky because I haven't had any cravings. If I did I would probably give in.

I didnt know that it could also grow on produce though. Learned something new.

  • i think its safe to say to just be couscous about what you eat.
If it doesn't look fresh don't eat it. If you feel its not good to eat because you may get sick don't eat it. If you are not sure what seafood has or doesn't have Mercury then don't eat seafood.
I just wont eat anything but Avocados nuts and milk for the rest of my pregnancy. Thats all I crave anyways. lol

  • I shit you not, @GhostMonkey. They must have skipped the listeria scare in my grade school classes. But it's hardly fair to assume that because I didn't know one particular piece of news that I have NO idea what's going on in the world.

You're far more likely to get listeria from produce so I hope you're microwaving your salads too.

Actually I have made that. Not bad I guess but not worth the effort. The bacon grease didn't make it magically better, just tasted like oil on my spinach salad.

  • You're being a little ridiculous, @GhostMonkey. That's cool that you knew something I didn't; that's the point of forums. To share knowledge. Just because you have known something for a long time does not mean that it is common knowledge or that someone else is stupid for not knowing it.

  • Eat whatever you want from reliable, clean sources & you're good. The human race is more sturdy & robust than folks think.

True story: the sickest I ever got was from eating a portobello mushroom burger with spinach. Violently ill for two days. So with subsequent pregnancies I said to hell with it & are what I pleased.

Coffee, Sushi, rare steak, bleu cheese, most soft cheeses, hot dogs, deli meat-- you name it. I broke every "rule" except wine. That's because I had an aversion to it.

If you spend your whole pregnancy fretting about what to eat then how are you supposed to enjoy it?

I enjoy food more while pregnant & I just can't live in fear. It's too taxing. If you feel more comfortable observing every rule then do so. However, don't fool yourself into thinking that it will somehow make you miscarriage proof. There is no such thing.

You can follow all the rules in the world & sometimes shit still happens. It is what it is. Live your life, eat your food.

Wait.  You were in grade school 2 years ago during all that?  No wonder you're having trouble keeping up with world events.

This. I ate sliced cheese and lunchmeat (unheated) throughout my entire pregnancy.  You'd have more chance of contracting listeria by eating fresh fruit or veggies.

Oh, but I see above this has thoroughly been covered!  :-)
