Questions about how do registry completion discounts work?

I want to know for purposes of knowing when I have to be "done" adding things to the registry.
(Is it different for Amazon, BRU, Target?)
My main question is: Do they basically freeze your registry at a certain point in time (like 8 weeks before your DD) and you would only get the % off the items that were on at that time? How do you know exactly when that is? (So they must have a list or something where they know exactly what you are allowed to get? Or do you get a coupon mailed to you that says exactly what you can buy with it? I'm thinking you can't just add random things when you go to use the completion discount?)
If you have a pack of diapers or something on there, do you only get to use the discount on ONE pack of diapers, or is it unlimited?
And do you have to buy everything at once in order to use the discount?

Re: Questions about how do registry completion discounts work?

  • For our wedding registries, we got coupons for a certain % off anything on our registry. We could keep adding after the event on some of them. You should get the coupon a few weeks before baby arrives, but can still add things at that time.

  • As far as I know, you can add stuff at any time.  BBB sent me a paper coupon, whereas amazon just gave me an alert on my registry that I had the coupon to use.  They generally give it to you about a month before your due date.  The coupon is for one item.  So if you use it on a dresser that cost $200, you get it for $160.  But if you chose to you it on a pack of daipers, you get 20% of that pack of daipers.  It goes by what you add to the cart.  Obviously four packs of daipers would count as four items in your cart, so the discount would only be on one pack.

  • I don't remember having a cut off date at BRU. I am pretty sure you can add stuff on to your registry up until your due date (or whatever you set as your event date). This was 3 years ago so it could have changed but with theirs I think it was 10% off of whatever was left on your registry. You couldn't get the discount if it was not previously on the registry but you could add stuff like before you went to the store that day and get the discount as long as it showed up when they printed it. If there is a cut off I can't imagine it is far before your date because items get discontinued all the time so you need to have the ability to update your list so your guests aren't trying to find an item that is no longer even sold.
  • @angelsnight you mean the completion coupon was for one item total off your registry?  For my wedding registry it was for one purchase of whatever remaining on the registry I wanted to get in that one purchase.  If its just 1 item that sucks :(

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure.  It may have been off the entire purchase, but we only bought one thing so maybe that's why I was thinking that.  It probably is the entire purchase because if you buy several things in that purchase, I don't know how it would know which item to discount.

  • I don't remember 100%. But I thought I was still able to add items to my amazon registry after my completion coupon code became available.  You get notified when the completion coupon is available. You can apply the coupon to an entire order, and it's a one time coupon.
  • My completion coupon for Amazon was good for a month or two. They sent me the email telling me the completion discount was ready (it was like 15% or something). It only applies to some items (I think all items that were actually sold via amazon and not other merchants.) But mine was 15% off about 70% of the items I registered for.

You could check by going through the checkout process but not checking out.

After completion coupon notice was sent, I spent a few days adding stuff to the registry that was not previously on it, then did the checkout and choose which items I wanted to buy and the 15% was taken off at the end. You can only use it on one order, but can have multiple items that it applies to.
  • No experience with baby registries obviously, but for my wedding registry there was no cut off date- we could add stuff even after the wedding.

At Bed Bath and Beyond I'm pretty sure they actually let us use it on everything in the transaction, even though some of it wasn't even on the registry.
