Preemies

New here! 28 week preemie born 11-6-13

Hey ladies!  I just wanted to do a quick intro.  I have been happily married for 8.5 years and we have a beautiful 2.5 year old daughter.  We had two losses after having her and then got pregnant with our son.  I went in to labor at 27w4d so we went to the hospital.  After 3 days of interventions and bedrest, I was moved to another room for long term bed rest.  Within an hour, my water broke!  Our 28 week son was born an hour after that.  He was crying which was the most beautiful sound ever.  I started a blog about him so here is the address. ourboycase.blogspot.com/

The NICU nurses are telling us every day how awesome he's doing which is so wonderful.  We expect him to come home in 8-10 weeks but the nurses say to expect preemies to stay until their due date.  So my question is, what about clothing?  I want to buy some preemie stuff for him if he's going to come home early but don't want to waste my money if he ends up staying until he's the size of a newborn.  What should I do?

  • Congratulations on the birth of your son! Welcome to the board!  The ladies on here are very helpful and are just wonderful!

How much does your son weigh?  I doubt that he will be able to wear clothes for a little while yet, depending on his size and his ability to regulate his body temperature.  I would buy a handful of preemie onesies and a PJ or 2.  He can wear them while in the NICU.  Onesies that have buttons were the easiest, and it was so great when our daughter was finally able to wear clothes.  I kept most of her preemie onesies and her 2 PJs as a memento.  My daughter was an itty bitty peanut and when we went home at GA 38 weeks, she was barely over 5 pounds.

  • Congratulations on your LO. Buy a few outfits. Don't go crazy. Preemies grow fast too! Diapers are supplied by the hospital and by the time you leave he will be in NB size. If you can do laundry on the regular only a few outfits are neccessary. If not buy some extra. Bring swaddles, halo makes preemie sleeper sacks. Our NICU provided sleeper sacks but I wanted my LO to have her own in pink.
Walmart carries a lot of preemie and so do carter stores if you happen to live near one. Outfits that button are best. No separate outfits or zippers. Makes things to hard with all the wires. Goodluck! Hoping for a quick and uneventful NICU stay for you.
  • Yep these ladies are bang on..outfits with buttons! We only had one or two preemie items and the rest we had newborn and just rolled up the sleeves etc. You will be shocked at how fast they grow! Look at it this way.. In "normal" circumstances everyone says just buy a couple newborn items and get everything else 0-3 because they grow out of NB so quickly...so it's the same just smaller. A couple preemie and then he'll be into NB in no time!
    Goodluck!
  • Congratulations on the birth of your son! That's fantastic that he's doing so well. To give you some perspective on preemie clothes, my DD was born at 31 weeks 3 days at 3 lbs 11oz and came home a month later at 4lbs 10oz and she wore preemie clothes for about a month I'd say from when she started in the hospital. I would wait until he's getting closer to the open crib before you decide how much to buy. My sister bought her a bunch of preemie outfits that she never wore, like dresses, because we mostly had her in footie pjs. Anyway, best wishes to you for a short & uneventful NICU stay!

  • Congrats on your little one! Hope he has an uneventful stay.

We were in the NICU until a week before due date and DD wore preemie clothes exclusively for only about a week or so after coming home. I panicked when she was born and at my shower I was inundated with preemie stuff. Since she had issues with jaundice and didn't wear clothes for awhile, we didn't even get to everything that had been purchased. Plus, she grew out of the small preemie stuff quickly. I'd have a few casks, but focus on newborn sizes.

    Congrats again and welcome :)

Congrats, happy to hear he's doing so well! PP's definitely have it all covered! My mom went a little nuts on buying preemie clothes so there was stuff he only wore once.

Due date discharge is definitely an estimate, we were told the same thing but we were discharged 3 weeks before. Hope your NICU stay is short and uneventful!
Hoping this one stays put a little longer

  • Congrats on your baby! Everyone else has good advice on the clothes. Our nurses encouraged us to bring in clothing to the NICU, and it really made a difference. Seeing her in clothes was so much better than seeing her in hospital white. We got about a weeks worth of outfits to rotate and looked forward to see what the nurses had dressed her in that day. Carters has a cute preemie line. Good luck with your baby!

  • Congrats! T's & P's for your family!! I agree, don't buy too many preemie clothes as they outgrow them super fast. Just get a few cute outfits (with buttons for all those dang cords) and wash them often. Also note the sizes vary widely by brand, it's crazy! We also noticed there is a huge difference between preemie and newborn so try to find some preemie clothes that are on the bigger side too, for when he gets to the in-between stage.

Our son was born at 31 weeks and we were told he'd likely be in the NICU until his due date (Aug 28) but we were discharged on Aug 4. Here's hoping your NICU stay will be quick and uneventful!! Remember to take care of yourself as well. Your baby needs a happy, healthy mom & dad as much as you need your son.

  • Congrats on your baby boy! I hope your stay is uneventful and that you are able to bring him home soon.

  • Congrats and welcome! Our NICU provided clothing but Anna received so many preemie outfits as gifts that she had her own wardrobe! Now they are in a small chest for her dolls. When she came home, she was 6 lbs and outgrew her preemie clothes after a couple of weeks.

  • Thank you ladies!  He is having a lot of bradys so I imagine that will make his stay longer.  He comes back out of them without intervention, but I am so new to all of this that I don't know whether that's normal or not.

  • @jackandseth A's and B's are very common for your LO age. He will probably outgrow them in the next coming weeks. It's no way an indicator of it effecting when your LO will come home. It is far to early to tell that now.
  • Congrats on your son!
I think the other ladies covered the clothing question, but I did want to add:
    1. Walmart does have great, cute preemie items, but many have zippers and are footed. Since they were inexpensive, I just cut holes in the seams in the foot and the side for DS wires. My nurses didnt mind, but definitely check with them first.
    2. I ordered several items from nurtureplace.com. The Vitamins & Little Me items are tagged preemie but are actually newborn size (disappointed) but several other items were a perfect fit (and made in USA)!

Good luck & I hope your NICU stay is brief!
  • Oh yes, Brady's are common. They are scary but rest assured he will outgrow them. Our NICU added on 7 days to his stay every time he had one or 5 days if it was while eating. Pretty much if they haven't had one in 5 days it's likely they've outgrown them. Just be there for your son and take every opportunity to help and learn what you can. They showed us what to do during a Brady so if it happened when we were there, we handled it. I wish you all the best and hugs!!!

  • Congrats and welcome.  I'm a mom to twin boys who were born at 28 weeks, now 2 years old.  They were in the NICU for 10 weeks.  I hope your little man continues doing so well.  I found preemie clothes at Target, Walmart, and the Carter's outlet store.  I think most if not all were on clearance.  They were able to start wearing clothes when they were about 4-5 weeks old.
  • Congrats! Dd was born at 33w3d, and they never gave us a time frame of when she would come home. She was a feeder and grower, and had to learn the whole suck swallow breathe thing. She came home at 12 days old, just over 1 month before her due date.
