Fascination with Penis?

My LO seems to be fascinated with himself. I know a little is fine, but lately anytime we take the diaper off his hand is there and he is playing with it right away. At first my DH was concerned and I dismissed it, but now I'm wondering is anyone else going through this? I'm sure it's just a phase, but just wanted some reassurance.

Re: Fascination with Penis?

  • Yes DS (16 months) is fascinated also. He grabs at it in the bath tub, diaper changes...occasionally while he's fully dressed too (and he'll proudly announce "PEE PEE!" with a huge grin on his face. Can't wait for him to start telling everyone in public about his newly learned body part!)

  • Kids explore all their body parts and we aren't bothered by any of them except their private areas because, as adults, we attribute hang ups to those areas.  Kids don't have those hang ups.  They get to use their hands and play with their feet and pick their noses and scratch their knees.  Their private areas aren't easy accessible so the minute they ARE, they take advantage of it.

  • Normal...but not just a phase. Penis fascination never ends. They just eventually learn that it's not considered acceptable to constantly show and share how fascinating it is.

  • As PP said, totally normal.  This morning I put DS on the changing table and he grab a toy car that had been left there last night from the babysitter.  As soon I got his diaper off he was hitting his penis with the car.  We just try to wipe or wash his hands when we're done with the diaper change, or keep him away when it's poopy.
  • Completely normal. No need to worry. DS went through the phase. It's died out some, but he still grabs it sometimes. His new fasciation is his butt, and proudly announces "my butt, my butt." Hopefully he'll be more amused with his eyes or something soon.

  • I don't have a problem with it, I just wanted to make sure it was normal. I feel better now knowing that it is. Thanks everyone!

  • Also, in case anyone with daughters is dealing with this, it's normal for little girls as well. Kids just want to explore everything, especially themselves.
