How do you brush those teeth?

DD was fascinated with her toothbrush and loved for us to brush her teeth. Now, not so much. She wants to do it herself, which of course is completely ineffective. If we try to help or do it she screams and pull her lips over her teeth. I've had to resort to sitting her on my lap and making a game of tipping her upside down to make her laugh, brush what I can like mad while trying not to drop her, tip her back up, and so on until the job is done. I want to find a solution that is easier on my back, but won't make her dread having her teeth brushed like forcing her to sit there and get it done. What are your ways that are working?

Re: How do you brush those teeth?

  • I use a finger brush with a little bit of infant toothpaste and brush while she is holing and chomping on a regular toddler brush. DH usually holds her while I brush, so I can maneuver around to get different angles, or I do it while she's in the tub. She still won't let me brush her with a regular toothbrush, but the pediatric dentist said the finger brush is fine.

  • We use Toms strawberry toothpaste (w/ fluoride) and spin brushes. They got to pick their own spin brush. We do animal sounds while I brush, rawr, ee-ee (monkey), etc. then I let her do it herself. She throws a fit when I turn it off and take it away. We rinse and spit by blowing raspberries.

They've both gone through refusal phases, but this has been working for a while now. (Knock on wood)

  • I have about 30-45 seconds where DD will let me brush her teeth before she wants to do it herself. I make the best of it! We still don't use toothpaste because she shows no interest in spitting. And I only let her play with her toothbrush while we are in the bathroom. If she wants to leave she has to return the toothbrush.

  • @michyme123 that's a good idea to put a song with it. Sometimes I can get DD to stop screaming on the change table by singing "5 little monkeys" because she likes music. Maybe I'll try to find another song she'll like.

Oh, that is a good idea! We have similar issues, but haven't tried that one.

  • She has a toothbrush that she holds and I have one that I hold.  The one I hold gets actual toddler toothpaste and I pretend to put it on the one she holds.  She "brushes" my teeth with her toothbrush and I actually manage to brush most of her teeth with my toothbrush.  It works out most nights!
