Babies: 9 - 12 Months

XP: Travelling With Baby

I'll be travelling with LO this week and we're taking our first flight together!  The flight is about 2 1/2 hours long.

Any tips for travelling with a 10 month old would be much appreciated!!! I'm not sure of what to do to keep her entertained for 2 hours on a plane when her primary goal is to crawl around and get into trouble!

Thanks so much!!!

Re: XP: Travelling With Baby

  • We flew at 8 months, which was probably a little easier... But my honest suggestion would be to keep her up as long as you can in the car/airport so there's a better chance she sleeps on the plane!  DD was in the ergo most of the day (even on the plane), but she's a terrible napper when she isn't in the crib so she mostly just hung out on my lap.

Maybe get some new books/small toys that would be interesting for her.  And an empty plastic water bottle from inside the airport is great - DD would play with that forever!  Don't hesitate to ask the flight attendant for an extra plastic cup, napkins, etc - all are "new" interesting things that the babies tend to love :)  Get up and walk around a little once you're up in the air if she's really not wanting to sit still.

And don't worry about her crying - babies do that sometimes.   The other passengers will survive, whether they like it or not :P

  • Thanks so much! I never thought about the tip about the cups etc. - she would love playing with those for sure! Thanks again :)

  • I just flew by myself with my LO who was 10 1/2 months -- 13 hours on a plane.  Not terrible, but not something I want to do again any time soon.

Totally agree with PP--looking at new items fascinated my LO.  Cups, straws, spoons, wrappers, etc.

When deciding what to pack for him on-board, I erred on the side of too many toys, and I'm glad I did:  small bag of blocks, books we read over and over and over again (one of them was a touch/feel book that kept him occupied for quite a while), plastic keys to chew on, a stuffed monkey with rattles/teethers on each paw, alphabet and first words flash cards (these were a life saver! found at the dollar store!), plastic "game" for kiddos under 1.  He really liked the toys that were newer and not as familiar--kept him occupied much longer.

Other activities: looking out the window at the clouds, eating crackers, crawling on his car seat, looking at pictures of himself on my phone, playing peekaboo, interacting with friendly people.  I didn't hesitate to pass LO to other people next to me if they wanted to hold him or play with him for a bit.  He enjoyed it and I could supervise from my seat.

  • I always fly with mine in a car seat. I did 2 hour long flight with an 8 mo and 2yo recently. 8 mo does not nap in public but the car seat worked a treat, asleep before takeoff and no expectations to move around :)
Lots if toys and snacks are great too.

  • Flew with my LO when he was 9 months old, a 2 hour flight like yours. He got a little antsy because he couldn't run around, but he did end up falling asleep half way through the flight and through landing. If you use a binky, it is your best friend!! He ripped up the in flight magazines and said hi to the passenger next to us. If there are any other kids on the flight, see if you can get their attention while you're at the gate. We got lucky and one little girl sat 2 rows behind us and made faces and played peek a boo during the flight. He did cry a little bit but it was more crankiness at being cooped up. Would definitely do it again!
  • I just flew with my 9 month old on two, 2 hour 40 minute flights. We timed it so that he was due for a bottle at take off (good for the ears) and also due for a nap. He fell asleep for at the end of the bottle and napped for an hour and a half. The rest of the time we snacked on Cheerios, puree pouches, and yogurt melts, played with finger puppets and played with an empty, plastic, small wine bottle (grandma needed a beverage, lol). Also, the wubbanub was a must. We didn't over pack toys because we knew he would be more interested in playing with the window shade, tray table and magazines. Many rounds of peek-a-boo were also most useful.

Don't bring any toys that roll, they will get dropped and they will roll to the back of the plane.
  • I flew with mine at 5 and 7 months. Now that she is 9 months we are getting ready to fly for Thanksgiving. I recommend wearing your baby (check the carseat as luggage) especially if it's just you and your child. Most airlines will only allow you to have one prepared bottle if you don't nurse. And I would feed or nurse at take off. Those are probably the biggest. This time around it'll be a little bit different because my daughter is more mobile and also eats more solid foods.
  • Please check out some info on the carseat lady's blog about checking car seats, it's very very dangerous.

  • Thanks everyone - the trip went VERY well. As long as she had puffs, cheerios and the breast she was A-OK! I got so many compliments on both trips on what a well behaved baby she was :).  Funny enough - she didn't care a lick about the toys she just wanted the snacks and a nap in between!
