Testing

Is anyone else getting the panorama testing done for Down Syndrome? Are you going to use that test to find out the gender? When are you getting it done?

I'm a late May 2014 mom. My ob/gyn said I could get it done as early as 9 weeks (along with panorama's website) but they send me to another doc for the test. That office prefers no earlier than 11 weeks and their schedule could only get me in at 12 weeks. Insurance, doc offices, and panorama people are not telling me the bottom line cost- but I worry it will be at least $795. I'm probably going to cancel my appointment and just do the NT scan,

  • I have mine scheduled for this Thursday and Ill be 10 weeks 2 days and I believe the cost is $145. That's a lot. I wouldn't do it either for $795

  • My doctor told me that the test doesn't tell you yes or no if your baby has downs or not. It just gives you the odds. I feel like its added stress that I don't need. So I'm not going to do it. Especially with the out of pocket cost. I would rather enjoy the pregnancy and deal with whatever comes later.
  • Oh really. My doctor told me it says yes or no and the other one NT Scan is the odds.... hmmm.

The NT scan gives you the odds. The blood test gives you the DNA of the baby.

I will make this decision if I make it that far. I'm eligible because of age and having a previous trisomy 18 baby. I just don't know yet.

    Fucking bump!!!!
  • This whole testing area is so gray to me. I have no idea what to do, which screens to get or not get, etc. I definitely have to do more research on this.

  • Then I guess that's the only one my doc told me about. I will be 35 on my due date so he was telling me about the testing and the odds. It's all so scary. @pintobean39 T&P'S you make it the whole 9 months :)
  • Yeah I agree. All the testing is scary. I don't know, I have it scheduled but some days I wonder should I even do it. Its makes you nervous.

  • It would be nice to know the sex of the baby though.
  • @zipscheer07. I'd feel more comfortable with the blood test than the nt scan. To many people that I know have had the nt scan and they saw something and it ended up nothing was wrong. At least with the blood test you know, DNA doesn't lie.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • Exactly. That's why I scheduled the Panorama test and not the NT scan. I had the NT scan with my little girl and though it came back good, going into that ultrasound was terrifying and I didn't like just knowing odds. I want to know yes or no. @Cherylwang.. yes knowing is good... Im a planner :)

  • We just had this test done at 10 weeks and are waiting for the results. We decided to do this based on our ages and our own fears and beliefs. It was ~$175 at my drs office. And we are going to find out the gender early! I never knew this option was available so soon so that is cool.

  • As far as I know youll be the first to know what your having :)

  • I'm getting the maternit21 test today at 2pm (I am 37 yrs old). I'm not sure if that is the panorama test you are referring to? They said it will take about a week for the results and will be able to tell the sex of the baby. They also said they will be doing an u/s which will be a huge relief since the dr couldn't find the heartbeat with the Doppler yesterday. She didn't seem worried at all though. I can't wait until 2!!
  • My doc never mentioned this test, but we are doing the NT scan (only because it is 100 percent covered by insurance).

  • We are doing the maternit21 test at just shy of 12 weeks. We have a family history and the hospital we are planning to deliver at doesn't have a nicu so we would probably switch if we had any complications. We are also scheduled to get the nt scan but I am going to ask they don't share results until we get the blood test back. I don't want to worry if there's nothing to worry about. Finding out the sex early is a nice bonus but not the main reason we decided to do it.

  • We aren't doing this or the NT. We didn't with DS because we are both young and healthy and don't want to stress about odds - especially knowing we won't do the amnio.

Good point.  We wouldn't do amnio either.  I guess I was being hopeful it would be ok and therefore reduce stress rather than add it.  Hmm.

The NT gives you odds - 1 in 1000, 1 in 5 that your baby will have X. That doesn't for sure they have it, it means there is a _____chance that they do. Even a 1 in 3 chance means there is a 2 in 3 chance baby is healthy. A lot of people stress out about the numbers and I really didnt want to do that.
  • I'm having the Harmony test and ultrasound in 2 weeks because I'm AMA (37). My OB said that my hospital doesn't offer the option to find out the sex for ethical reasons. Specifically, they are fearful that people would abort based on the sex.

  • If the results come back yes would you abort the baby?
The best advice I got about all these tests was if the results don't matter and you will have and love the baby anyways, why have the test?
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • I would definitely not abort the baby in any way but knowing, in my opinion, will allow me to be better prepared for the delivery day and know what I can expect and what they need.

Because in some cases, it will give you time to process the information and meet with additional doctors. We're doing it based on family history and if I found out I was going to have a baby with Trisomy 21 I'd be pushing for extra cardiac screening and trying to talk to other mother's who had been in the same boat so I'd be more prepared once my child is here.
Its not necessarily about having a termination or not, but about being better prepared and having more time to process the news.

  • I totally understand being prepared. I would hate for the test to be wrong and do all the preparation and have a perfectly heathy baby and have worried about nothing for 7 months. Good luck on your tests. I pray you have good results and only have to prepare for a healthy baby boy or girl!
