How many diapers do babies really use??

I was looking into doing the monthly package from the Honest Company.
For $80 a month you get 320 NB diapers and 4 packs of wipes. It seems like a good deal with them being organic and all.
My question is how many diapers do babies actually use a month? Will these packs cover the whole month? Or will I still need to stock up on top of that??

Chart as follows

NB- 320 diapers
1- 264 diapers
2- 240 diapers
3- 204 diapers.
So on and so forth.

Re: How many diapers do babies really use??

  • I've heard to change every 2 to 3 hours/when wet/soiled while newborn. So that's roughly 7 to 10 diapers a day, but I think it also depends on how often and how heavy of a wetter/soiler your individual baby will be. I think my half-sister said she went through about 8 diapers a day for the first two months with her daughter.

  • You know, I've never added it up. But I'd say somewhere between 6 and 10 a day. The problem you might run into is having baby grow out of a size (especially NB, ir maybe even size 1) before you've used all the diapers in that size... I use NB diapers at the hospital if they give that size to me, but I don't think I've ever used that size outside the hospital. My babies have been 8#3oz, 6#15os, and 7#0oz... I think #2 got NB size in the hospital because she was under 7#, but everyone else started off in size 1.
  • I've added them up before, out of my own curiosity and in the beginnig it's about 10 a day. He is in size 4's and I would say we go through 6-8.

  • Oh yeah he only lasted a month in NB. he was 7#10

  • When I used the honest company the amount they sent was enough to cover me for the month

  • We CDed, but it seemed like we still changed DD about the same as if we didn't.  I would say the first month was 8-12 a day.  Over the next few months it went down gradually until around 9-10 months and since we've used about 6-7/day.

You can get a trial with a few Honest Diapers in them, I think the one I got had around 5-6, just to see if I liked them to have when I needed disposables.  I hated them.  They leaked, they are "tough."  They chafed DD's legs, and she's a skinny kid, she was about 2 when I tried the diapers.  For the price, they just aren't very good.

  • The first 3 weeks with DD, before we started using cloth, we wet through 3 o those big cases of diapers plus some--so probably like 300 diapers? Newborns pee and poop A LOT. And they pee and poop as your changing them and right after you change them.

Like PP said, you also never know how long NB size (or any size) will last for your LO. We had some gifted disposables as back ups, and NB and size 1 fit forever, but we never even touched the size 2s and went straight to 3s. And you don't know if that particular brand will fit right. I would be careful before you stock up on lots of on brand/size of diapers, or else be okay with possibly trying to resell them on a B/S/T site.

Newborns need to be changed a lot - I would say 8-12 times/day. I used cloth from the get-go and had about 30 nb sized diapers and was able to do laundry every other day.

That rate slows down as they get older, but daycare typically changes them every 2 hours per most state regulations.

  • I swear my son went through more than 10 a day in the beginning. He would poop in a fresh diaper while he was still on the changing table getting changed from being wet. I bet 320 would get you through a good chunk of the first month though! And your baby will probably grow out of the NB size within a few weeks anyway.

  • I don't know from experience. But it seems to me that those kind of plans are designed to sound like it will fit your needs but ultimately the company has to turn a profit. Can you buy the same diapers separately?

  • Also just too add , as a pp said you might not want to stalk up on a certain brand. With dd I stalked up some diapers and I couldn't even use them because she had a horrible allergic reaction to them . I'm talking blisters down there ! And I would try different diapers brands (never did cloth diapers though) and she could only wear the actual pampers brand . And she also never used new born size. But my daughter always loved to go poop while I put the fresh diaper on her ! NEVER went when she had a diaper on always with me holding her little legs up and on nice fresh diaper ! So just keep in mind there's a lot to consider :)
  • It is hard to say.. as a FTM, everytime I saw that line, I changed him.  Also, he was breastfed and probably pooped 12x a day, so I would say we went through more like ~15 diapers a day for the first 6 weeks.

After solids, I would say it got down to about ~10 a day.

He is 26 months now and not yet potty trained and we go through about 6 a day.

  • We never used disposable wipes but we had about 45 cloth wipes that we went through every 1.5 to 2 days. We did disposables the first 5 weeks before going out and buying a small stash of size small CDs and putting her in our one size CDs even though she peed out the leg holes constantly. I would say 10-12 changes for the first 6-8 weeks, then maybe 8-10 changes until you start solids. I have a super pooper and we still go through 8+ a day at 21m, so I think at some point it starts to depend on your baby's habits.

In the 5 weeks we did disposables full time and maybe 5 more weeks we did them about half time, we went through two small packs of newborn pampers (one from the hospital, one from a shower gift) and 3 of the 176 count Earth's Best size 1s. She was born at 7lb4oz but was fine in size 1s after the first few days. I guess that means about 500+ diaper for 7.5 weeks of full time use.

I definitely would not buy 300 newborn size diapers off the bat, especially since you can't return them like you can with unopened packs from a big box store.

  • 8-12 per day as a nb. He was 6lb 2oz at birth and was in them for a month. It decreases as they get older. He now is 2 and uses maybe 5 per day.

  • It depends on the baby. DS was so picky as a newborn that I was so glad we were CDing. We used sposies for the first 2 weeks while waiting for his circ to heal and we went through I think 3 of the 36 packs. One day I changed him 4 times in an hour and a half because he would pee, cry, change, poop, cry, change, pee again, cry and change. He would barely trickle any pee out and insist on being changed. He's not near as bad now though. But my mom even said he was the pickiest baby she had ever seen.

A newborn uses anywhere from 10-12+ a day. That goes down significantly once they're a bit older. We average about 6-8/day right now.

  • I breastfed DS and for probably the first 4 months he pooped every time he ate.  For the first month that was about every two hours (so figure at least 12 diapers a day) and then it went to every 3 hours (so at least 8 diapers a day) for another month or so and then every four hours.  He wasn't particular about having a slightly wet diaper but not all babies are like that.

  • A lot! For about 3 months he would pee on at least 1 diaper while I was trying to put it on.
  • We never used newborn diapers, born at almost 12 lbs, went thru one big economy box of size 1s and a few small packages then we were in size 2 by 2-3 months. We were in size 4s the longest, size 5 the second longest and now we are size 6s and I'm hoping to potty train before we get to size 7s :/

  • DS never even wore newborn diapers, he went straight to size one.  I would be nervous about ordering that many NB diapers before knowing how big your LO will be.

  • my dd was 8lbs 11 oz and lost nothing after the hospital and she was in newborn for 6 weeks. It has nothing to do with weight and everything to do with shape. Babies use about 7-9 a day.

When DD was a newborn we changed her every time she ate, so about every 2-3 hours plus poops in between. That's at least 12 diapers a day. Gradually it tapered off from there. She's now one and we prob go thru 6ish diapers a day.

I tried The Honest Company. Super cute, but stiff and leaky. I was unimpressed. Plus they are crazy expensive. You can get much betters on other brands via Amazon Mom. I love their household products and their healing balm is amazing. However, I'm not a fan of their business practices, especially their bullying of Honest Toddler. I haven't bought any of their products since that all went down.

  • Newborns use a lot of diapers. But my DD is in size 3s and we only use 150 diapers a month, tops. Probably more like 120. And as your child grows they will have different diaper needs. My DD needs size 4 night time diapers at night so she doesn't wake up wet. Since we only use those once a day, a box lasts us two months.

I would be scared committing to that many diapers every month when you don't really know what you'll need. Also, your LO might not do well with the Honest Company's diapers. You just never know.
