Caffeine and alcohol in the 2ww

Just curious what everyone's thoughts are on this lovely topic? I try to avoid both, but will cave for a fountain coke or coffee on occasion. And I did sip on a beer when we were out to eat with MIL just to avoid the questions (although she cornered DH alone anyway to ask "where we were" with all this crap).

Also curious what people have been told about caffeine in general? I think it was @freakyfast who said your doctor wanted you to cut it out completely? What's the reasoning for that? Mine has always gone by the same as for pregnancy - like a cup of coffee or soda a day.

After this recent loss, my outlook on my 2WW policies will no doubt become more strict.

Because I was *so SURE* AF was on the way I indulged in both and now I battle a lot of guilt.

From now on 2WW = pregnant - always.

My acupuncturist does not like coffee, not even deaf. But, I cannot live without a cup in the morning.

I've always drank both coffee & alcohol in the 2ww. Actually, I hardly ever drink alcohol, but if the opportunity presented itself (like a wedding) in the 2ww, I wouldn't think twice about it. I've just seen too many meth addicts and alcoholics get KU time & time again. I figure I can have my damn cup of coffee or my 1-2 beers!

I avoid alcohol, but still drink a cup of half caff coffee every morning.

I avoid alcohol but I'm not a drinker anyway, so this is not really a change from any other day. As far as caffeine goes, I might have a coffee or two during the 2ww but I go for the smallest size and do part decaff. I'm not a soda drinker, so no real changes there. And I do not alter my chocolate intake at all.

So I'm more cautious during the 2ww but not super strict.

I don't give up caffeine because I think my husband would divorce me if I did! As for alcohol, I do love a glass of wine and cut back during my 2ww but do not cut it out completely. I agree with @kndeckar, people addicted to far worse things get KU and have healthy babies all the time!

Yes to both! Though I am not a big drinker in general (I mean like 1 or 2 drinks per year drinker) but if I was so moved, I'd have a drink and not give it another thought. I might think twice about getting balls ass drunk in the 2ww though? Then again, I'm too damn old to be getting balls ass drunk any time of the month.

Jen071407 It was me that said my RE wanted me completely off of caffeine. I took my surgery time to completely cut it out, knowing I would go through withdrawals and have a withdrawal headache, but knowing i'd be sleeping anyway through most of it. I have heard and read that they want you off of caffeine before, and during 1st tri, then 2nd tri you can move up to a cup a day.

I have read that caffeine can cause lots of problems but really can't anything anymore. I don't really know the FACTS, but the look my nurse gave me when I told her I had weened down to one cup, and her saying, well we need you off of it completely kind of sold me on it. Plus the fact of the thousands and thousands of dollars we are spending. So... I am not sure if caffeine causes problems with implanting, but I would suppose it COULD. I can ask my nurse. I will ask and follow up.

I am down to one cup a day and no alcohol but I am not sure it really makes a difference.

This is the answer I just got from my nurse:

Caffeine has been associated with increase in miscarriage . Some OBGYN providers are ok with one caffeinated beverage daily. However, due the intense process of IVF and FET cycles this precaution is in place to avoid any unnecessary complications. Also, it is associated with decrease in blood flow – as patients that have elevated Doppler ultrasound – are told to cut out caffeine.

She did also mention that I could have caffeine now, but I would be told to stop on FET Day 1.

I have no problems giving it up if there's a reason to.

So my office is SUPER COLD... and i have gone to drinking just hot water. I used to drink green tea while at work, after having coffee in the morning. Luckily I cut out pop a long time ago, so I don't have that problem. The coffee is the toughest.

I'm in the drink until it's pink camp. The 2ww, which is normally only about 10-11 days anyway, are fine to act normal in my book. I also don't go crazy on the alcohol anyway, but I'm not going to avoid a glass or wine or one beer during the 2ww.

I drank caffeine and alcohol until I got a BFP with my DD. I've done the same this time around. I don't drink as much caffeine or alcohol now as I did then though.

My RE nurse said, "if a glass of wine occasionally is what gets you through this, then drink up!"

Here's my thought. If we were on the TTC board I might not indulge in either during the 2ww. However since we are here and it could take years I do both in moderation. I have started limiting caffeine at all times because I've heard excessive amounts can hurt fertility. However I still have one cup of coffee per day.
