Preemies

Bottles

I have 6 weeks old twin girls...born at 32 weeks. They spent 5 weeks in the NICU. I nurse and bottle feed them. In the hospital they used the little disposable bottles, I just switched over to the avent bottles. They take them fine and seem to like them except for I notice a lot of dripping coming out while they are eating, I noticed it to with the NICU bottles but not this much. Their bibs are soaked when the feeding is over. Is it normal from it to drip that much? Is it just them getting used to the bottles or should I try different bottles? Just wondering before I go out and buy anything. Thanks!

Re: Bottles

  • It may be the flow of the nipple.

  • Yes it's normal. We were told not to worry about the milk coming out around their mouth as it's either that or too much milk going down and choking them. They'll grow into them. Remember they are still learning how to suck, swallow, breathe. Our LO hardly loses a drop now and we are still using same bottles and nipples.

  • I literally JUST tested out my Tommee Tippees in the NICU earlier today (preparing to come home tomorrow?!?!?) and had the same issue. I felt like most of the bottle dribbled out of his mouth. Thank you for posting this, OP. PP, I had no idea that Dr. Browns has preemie nipples- thanks for the info!
  • The NICU sent us home with a bunch of the nipples for those disposable bottles, so I bought the Gerber Essential bottles.  It may be old fashioned, but she does better with those than all the Avent bottles I have.

  • Okay thanks!!! Out LO will only use the orthodontic nipples from the NICU. So we have to order from mfr at about $1 a piece. Ouch!! We've tried a ton of others though and he just doesn't do well with them

  • Yes! I was freaking out because we were about to run out and then I found where I could order them. At that point I had tried so many others and they were a no go. Thanks anyway. Very kind to offer!!

  • We had the same thing with the Avent bottles and my LO who is now 37 wks (born at 35) I tried the nipple that came with my breast pump and it went much better! I suspect she will grow into the other ones sooner rather than later.
