Black Friday Shopping

Is anyone else refuse to start shopping on Thursday this year. I am personally very irritated that Target, Walmart and many other stores are opening at 6 pm on Thursday. I have been an avid Black Friday shopper for 15+ years but I will not start until Friday. Thursday is my family time. What are your thoughts/feelings on this?

Re: Black Friday Shopping

  • I don't usually shop on Black Friday but I don't think it's a big deal to start on Thursday.  If I were in the States I would probably be more likely to go out Thursday night than Friday morning. There are lots of sales online so I might take advantage of some of that but according to our post office chart if I order things that late it likely won't be here for Christmas so I'm pretty much done with shopping/shipping already.

Well considering my Dad manages a Walmart in our area and doesn't get to have Thanksgiving with the family... I'm pretty upset. My husband also has to work on Thanksgiving since he works in a restaurant that happens to be open to serve Thanksgiving dinner. So it will just be the girls and DS this year. I agree whole heartedly that Thanksgiving should be for FAMILY. Not shopping for deals. Have Black Friday all you want, but I want my family for Thanksgiving day :(

I agree that they shouldn't be open. But since they are, we'll be going out because dh wants a kindle. I figure he spent years working on Xmas so he can shop if he wants to.

Eta: not everyone hates working on thanksgiving. My ex used to volunteer to, he made double time and a half and came home with about 10 plates of food everyone brought him. We just celebrated our thanksgiving on a different day.

  • Lately, I've just done all of my shopping online....on Thanksgiving day. :) As long as the stores aren't coercing their employees to work, are offering them overtime to do so if they volunteer, I have no issue with stores opening up. No one is "obligated" to go tackle other shoppers to save a few bucks. We're all adults and can make the decision to spend time with family at home, or make Turkey Day crowd surfing a new holiday tradition.

  • I'm not a black Friday shopper, I'm a cyber Monday shopper so I do most all of my holiday shopping online. It's wonderful! If I was a retail associate and I was forced to work I'd be pretty PO'd about it. Do they get paid more by working Thanksgiving Day?

  • i think it's crazy....the guy on the news today had a point...thanksgiving is really one of the most no non commercial holidays....and it really seems to be such a great holiday to bring the whole family together...
it really does irk me that stores are open so early on thursdays...i work in retail in corp offices, but i used to work in a store, like 10 years ago...yeah black friday was always a thing, but we opened at like, 6am and that was crazy to me...
a few years ago dh and i started bf shopping, and waited on line for the store top open at midnight....then one year we did walmart, the one by us is open til 12 normally, so everyone was in the shopping since thursday
i just don't know what happened and when it got to the point that stores had to open before midnight on thanksgiving...i think our stores open 8pm on thanksgiving....which isn't as bad...i mean as long as stores open late enough so that people could have time with their family....
    i don't know.....i'm rambling

  • Like you OP, I've been an avid black Friday shopper for years. I love it, live for it. But I think its getting ridiculous with all the early openings. It's ruining it, in my opinion. I will not go out on Thanksgiving. That's family time. It's not about commercialism. Ugh, so frustrated by it. If it means I miss out on some good sales, then I do, but spending family time means a lot more!

  • Thanksgiving is the only holiday that my extended family gets together so I will not give up any time with them to go shopping.  I also hate the idea that those people are missing Thanksgiving with their families.  Depending on the deals we may do some online shopping on Thursday and I imagine we will probably go out Friday and Saturday (for small business Sat).

  • I will add that I used to be a sales manager for a major retailer, at the time we opened at 5 am Friday.  That shift was non-negotiable, every single employee was there at 4-4:30 a.m.  Most of us said that we would quit if we were ever told to work Thanksgiving day. This year I believe I heard they are opening on Thursday and I highly doubt it was an option for employees so I think it is BS when people say, "well, that's the employees' choice".

  • I always refuse to shop on Thursday!! I work retail and Thanksgiving & Christmas are the only day my store is closed!

I am an online Black Friday shopper. Black Friday is a mandatory work day and the start of the vacation blackout...last year was my first Christmas vacation in years thanks to being pregnant. I will be at work at 2am on Black Friday. Home by 11am and shopping online!!

  • I agree 100%! I go out every year on Black Friday and refuse to go on Thanksgiving. I think it is absolutely terrible of the companies to open on Thanksgiving.
