No birth control

edited November 2013 in September 2013 Moms
Is anyone else not trying to prevent? It took 4 years, many tests, two surgeries, scheduling IVF, and then being surprised naturally to get pregnant with our miracle DD this time. We made the decision long ago to not try and prevent after I had her.

I EBF her which is quite effective as birth control. It also means that I haven't gotten my period and may not until after I'm done BF. Just thinking ahead--how would I know if I'm pregnant or not? I mean obviously I'd know at some point, but as an ongoing thing, would you just test every few weeks? If I had a "feeling" or suspicion, of course I'd just test. Just planning ahead and wondering if anyone else is not preventing. :)

ETA: I'm 9 weeks pp, bled until I was 8 weeks pp. It's been nice to finally not be bleeding this past week!
4 years TTC including countless tests, 2 surgeries, and one failed IUI
Scheduled IVF for April 2013--SURPRISE, don't need it! DD Born 9/7/13
Ectopic pregnancy Sep/Oct 2014 ended in surgery, and many trips to the ER
Miracle #3: EDD 11/28/16

Re: No birth control

  • EBF can be effective BC, as long as you follow certain rules. It's called lactational amenorrhea. See this page to read about LAM. There are common things that you can't do for it to be as effective as possible (no pacifier use, for example and you should try to take a nap with baby every day).

All of that being said, we are definitely TTA at this point. However, we used LAM successfully between J. and A. and then between A. and S.

  • Is it still possible to get pregnant that way? Even if you feed on demand day and night? And I'm following- how would you be able to tell?
  • You can still get your period while breastfeeding (speaking from experience, I just got Aunt Flo for the first time since LO was born).

  • I EBF and got my period at 7 weeks pp. I have decided to not do bc but use other forms of prevention. I was on the mini pill and my supply started crashing.
  • My doctor told me that breast feeding is not an effective birth control and that if I don't want another baby soon then we should use some sort of birth control. I was on the mini pill but decided to stop taking it. I am 9 weeks pp and I've already had a period as well.
  • We don't do any medical BC, just condoms or pull n pray.

We know its not 100%, but it's always worked for us, and it's what we are comfortable with.

We found out we were 4 weeks when dd1 was 5 months old. For those TTC or NTTP, having them that close is pretty easy! My girls are 13 months apart and for the most part play great together and are each others best friends!

I'm another example of this... EBF and started my first cycle 8wk PP. So my body didn't skip a beat :(

  • I got an IUD last week so we are obviously preventing.  With DS1 I didn't get my first period until he was 13 months old, which was pretty nice. I did take a test every once in a while just to ease  my mind (I still had a stockpile of tests) because we ready for another one just yet.

  • I'm not taking any kind of BC and am EBF as well.  I started my period at 7 weeks PP.  We are just using condoms - BC pills have given me terrible acne in the past, so I refuse to take them. My doctor said that I can still get pregnant while breastfeeding, though.  If I were you, I wouldn't take a pregnancy test every few weeks, though.  That would get expensive.

  • I got pregnant with DS while BFing DD. She was 15 months and it was my second cycle since she was born (first AF was around her 1st bday).

  • I am not going on BC and I am EBF. We're trying to use condoms, but don't always remember. :/

My doctor also said the EBF isn't an effective BC. But it took us longer than we wanted to get pregnant and I put partial blame on the fact that I was on the NuvaRing for 6 years and the pill for 6 years before that. So I refuse to go back on. If we got pregnant now it wouldn't be the worst thing (though obviously not ideal). We'll probably stop preventing with condoms when she's 6 months and might actively try again when she is 9-12 months.

  • We're just using condoms. Hormonal bc doesn't mesh with me and IUD's freak me out.

Is be ok if we got pregnant again within maybe 10 months

  • I'm not using hormonal birth control, but we use more NFP. We plan on TTC again when LO is around 10 months old. We also struggled with miscarriages and infertility, so we are fine with having our LO close together in age.

All of this. Nuva Ring freaks me out, too, and I don't want to chance anything messing with my supply (I've heard that even the mini pill can).

Just FYI for those that are reading that are wondering whether or not you can get pregnant while breasfeeding...Yes. You know Michelle Duggar? From 20 Kids and Counting? She mentioned one episode that she got pregnant with most of her kids while breastfeeding. Including both sets of twins. Food for thought.
