Left My Milk Out After Pumping :( WWYD?

So... I pump while I'm at work and after each pumping (3), I put the cooler bag in the fridge.  Today when I got home I got sidetracked and didn't put the milk in the fridge like I always do.  I just found it (3 hours after it coming out of the fridge at work).  It was in a cooler bag but with no ice pack.  It still felt cool to the touch but not cold.  Anyone know if I have to trash this?  I'm so upset... this stuff is hard to make!

  • I'd think it was okay but if you want to be safe I'd maybe feed it to the baby now and pump in place of that feeding.

    This is what LLL says:

Storage Guidelines All milk should be dated before storing. Storing milk in 2-4 ounce amounts may reduce waste. Refrigerated milk has more anti-infective properties than frozen milk. Cool fresh milk in the refrigerator before adding it to previously frozen milk. Preferably, human milk should be refrigerated or chilled right after it is expressed.

Acceptable guidelines for storing human milk are as follows.

Store milk: at room temperature (66-78°F, 19-26°C) for 4 hours (ideal), up to 6 hours (acceptable) (Some sources use 8 hours)

Based on the above, you probably will be ok but like PP said, you might want to use it sooner than later. Whenever you use it, you can always smell it to make sure it hasn't spoiled. It shouldn't have any smell, so if it does, you might want to trash it.

  • Just an update... I called his doctor and the nurse said the milk should be fine.  I have had his babysitter giving it to him today so hopefully it's ok.  I really don't think it had a chance to even get room temp since it was in a cooler.  Thanks for the feedback!
