Let's Talk Holidays

In another post someone mentioned she had already started holiday shopping. While I have casually thought about it, I am nowhere near starting it.

So, let's hear what everyone is getting for everyone and what you would love to receive.

What do all the DH's want this year?

Are you buying your new LO something or chalking it up to "they won't know/remember anything anyway" or "that's what grandparents are for"?

And for those of you with other kids, what are you getting for them? Bonus points for advice on what to get an almost-2-year-old.

And Go.

Re: Let's Talk Holidays

  • Dd is 2.5 and this is the first year we are buying her presents. I refuse to wrap presents for dd2 just to open them for her. Idk if I'll get anything for dh. Probably a watch if I do. But our anniversary is 12/16 and we usually do a nice dinner for that. And my bday is 12/17. So there is just a lot going on. We aren't big present people though.

  • We don't do a lot of gifts in our family. My plan is to buy everyone something off their amazon wish list in our budget and call it a day.

My girls, 2 & 3, get a book, a toy, and something to wear. There stockings are filled with stuff they need like soap, toothbrushes, hair bows, etc.

LO will just get a stocking this year.

DH always gets a hat from one of the girls and a socks or a belt from the other. He hasn't mentioned what he wants so I don't know what he wants yet.

  • My DH husband just wants Home Depot gift cards.
I want all new make up.
I've bought some stuff for kids I'll just add a pic of what I got so far.
For my LO I'm just doing a stocking, one big gift from Santa and a few small things under the tree. I got my almost two year old giant lego building blocks, a tool table with play tools, riding car toy and a new wagon.
The 15 yr old boy we are getting new shoes, a new jacket, cell phone cover and a gym membership. Few other small things.
The 12 yr old dd we are doing clothes, cell phone and new violin.
  • I'm almost done shopping for DD. She's getting a little 3 wheeled scooter and a bunch of other things. So far, I've bought DH a pair of jeans. We draw names for the rest of the families.

  • People keep asking me what to get DS. I'm like hmmm let me ask my six week old what he wants! Ugh. Christmas is stressing me out this year!

I just say he wants diapers :)

  • I haven't started shopping but I'm planning. I got the Target toys catalogue and have been snooping through it for nieces and nephews.

DH: I have no freaking clue. I was going to surprise him with a new pair of boots but he informed me yesterday that he needed a new pair stat. So now I'm back to square one. He has every tool known to man, does not wear ties, reads what I read etc.

DS: He is getting a new pair of boots, for sure. He does not really play with toys, maybe a new video game, fishing equipment & outdoor things.

Me: I never ask for anything and I probably won't start now. I can't really think of anything I want. Maybe my husband to shut up while I'm typing this. ;)

DD: She will get developmental toys.

  • For DH, I have not a clue. Haven't even thought about it yet, to be honest.

DD1 is 6 and wants a Rainbow Loom to make the bracelets that "everyone at school has!"
I'm sure we will get her Despicable Me 2 and a few other movies too.
And any arts and crafts stuff is a hit with her, new markers are needed at this point.
When she was 2 we got her a playdoh table with lots of playdoh and accessories.

LO will probably get a few things, maybe some board books and age appropriate toys. I'm sure big sister will want to get her something.
  • @quartermisses, we have been strongly considering the M&D shopping cart for awhile now. Our dog is begging us not to get it.
Do you all have a play kitchen? I keep thinking we may eventually get one but that it is a slippery slope to having play food all over the house.
  • DH hates getting gifts.  Whenever he is asked what he wants he always just asks for t-shirts.  Lame!  We aren't doing gifts this year because we will be purchasing a new car in a few weeks and a house in the next 4 months.

LO will be getting a few gifts.  Mostly little toys.  Do you think he would mind if we wrapped up diapers and gifted them to him? lol

DS1 is 11 and has everything.  He is so hard to buy for.  Probably will be getting him ITunes gift card, clothes, and tickets to a basketball game as his big gift.  I also get him a hot cocoa mug gift set every year as a tradition to drink our Christmas cocoa in.

  • I bought DH a flat screen TV for his birthday and told him that doubled as his Christmas gift.

No clue what we are getting LO. Some books maybe? Some PJs?

I'm glad you posted this! I forgot my husband bought himself an iPad. I remember telling him merry Christmas I'm not getting him a gift now. He gifted himself !
  • For DH I usually go to the hunting section of Walmart (because everything is on sale because its close to the end of season) and but anything with a picture of a deer or the duck dynasty guys on it.

I ask DH for new underwear (I like the Victoria's secret pink stuff) every year but he always freaks out about going into that store without me lol.

I've got all sorts of stuff on sight for DS who'll be 2.5 like one of those matchbox cat carriers with slots for all the cars and possibly a play kitchen. No clue for DD... What does a 2 month old new other than diapers? dS was 5 months old on his first Christmas so I had a little more to work with but 2 months is a little younger even to get toys for later on.

New violin? Those aren't cheap! I used to play.

We got her a student violin last Xmas and she really stuck with it this year and is loving it so we are keeping our word and getting her one .

  • We thought about buying DD the hutch to go over her dresser as her Christmas gift since it's pricey and she won't know the difference anyway.

For DH I have no idea what to get he is much better at the gift giving than I am.

We also adopt a family so we do smaller stuff for each other.
  • DH is getting an iPhone bc he currently does not have a smartphone.

DD (almost 3) has too many toys so we are starting a swing set fund for her (our parents idea). She will get some coloring books, puzzles, and a stocking too. DS will get something from DD (likely a toy she wants lol) and I will buy him a stocking from PBK to match DD's.

I want a new case for my phone and a gift certificate to get my hair done or get a pedi. I am all about practical gifts!

  • We do stockings every year and I've already bought DH new hockey gloves and an electric razor. I usually always get a box of chocolates from my favourite chocolate shop ( it's an annual tradition from my childhood)
Not sure what to get LO. Maybe some books and new Pj's. Baby's first Christmas engraved ornament. Nothing to exciting since he won't know what's going on. In sure next year will be more exciting.
I have a December birthday too so it's a busy month.
We might just go with a combined bigger gift like an iPad that all of us could use. I'm hoping for a new coat for my birthday and maybe a new alarm clock that I can use as a docking station for my iphone for Christmas.
  • For DD and DS, they will be two months old. Since I was on bedrest for 13 weeks at the end of my pregnancy, both of my baby showers were converted to meet the baby parties in December. I put toys on their registries, so they can get them for the showers and from family. I want to set up college accounts for them as well. Need to put that on my to do list for this week.

SD10 is getting a smaller bunch of gifts from us this year. Partially due to all our hospital expenses and the overabundance of stuff in her room. Her room is always a mess and we told her to either organize giving stuff away or get less. She has opted to get less (from us at least, I know the grandparents will all send tons of stuff). She is getting from us: a weather clock (has a little figure telling her what to wear given the forecast - a need), a stand for her iphone that she uses as a video camera (want), a gift card to Barnes and Noble (read), and a robe (wear). I'll probably encourage people to get her gift cards to Justice. We need to set up a new college fund for her. She had one, but her mom drained it a few years ago. We'll set this one up without her mom on it.

  • DS will get developement toys and whatever else I buy from Black Friday that is baby related and been holding out on. Like the stroller.

DH may get something MtG related like leather deck box and/ or a wii so that he can play old snes games.
  • @10-4lilbuddy where did you get the weather clock? Sounds like a perfect gift for my dd1
  • I'm thinking of doing a stocking for LO with little things like pacifiers, socks, etc. things that we'll use anyways.

No clue for DH. There were 3 video games released recently that he wants but doesn't want to wait that long, so we might just consider them early gifts and be done with it.

He thinks he's getting me a new kitchenaid mixer, and we definitely can't afford that now, so he'd better not.

We're just getting small gifts for everyone else this year, looking for good deals.
  • We are doing "experience" gifts for DD1 - her first ballet class, horse back rides, aquarium or zoo annual passes. We will wrap up her dance clothes and riding outfit for her to open and include a note from Santa what they're for. The zoo or aquarium passes are more of a family gift.

DH is the HARDEST to buy for.

DD2 wasn't going to get anything until DD1 sat down and told us "I will ask Santa for toys for baby A1 because she's too little to talk. What does baby A1 want? And I will open her presents because she's too little to open them." Dammit. I'm buying her clothes and books and rewrapping DD1's old toys.

Bahamas too cute. At least she is thinking of hervlittlevsister.

  • I saw it mentioned and wondered if anyone was doing the:
    1 they want
    1 they need
    1 to wear
    1 to read

We aim to do that but it doesn't always fit perfectly into those categories without overlap. And I could never buy just 1 book. I'm a bibliophile.
  • Not sure, yet for my H...he's a techy guy, so hard to buy for. I need new jeans and work pants, so in-laws already handed money over for that. Jace wanted a themed bathroom, I just know, so we decorated the guest bath in jungle monkey theme, to go with his room, with money from FIL/MIL. Maybe some outfits and developmental toys, but nothing major for his first Xmas.

  • I'm waiting for Black Friday to do online shopping! I will be buying DD a few small gifts (small toys maybe) and DS gets gifts (he is four). I had bought some toys for DS on his first Christmas.

  • I am at a loss as to what to get DS...he is our first so I want to get him something just not sure what. I would like to get some type of educational toy...even if its something for around 6 mths or so (which all of the toys Im finding are). Want to do something but won't spend a ton since he won't remember...also being on unpaid leave this time of year is not fun!

  • @rsigler How does one go about adopting a family?  That sounds so great I would love the details.

For LO: DH just bought him a share of stock in General Electric, he got it on oneshare.com.  Im going to frame it and put it on his wall.  I think its nice  that  he will have it when he gets older.  I might get him some books too maybe toys.  I have an addiction to baby gap clothes so Ill prob be shopping there too.

For DH: UGH WHO KNOWS! We've been together for 9 years I've gotten him everything.  I always stuff his stocking with cologne and trinkets.  He just bought a new Audi so maybe some car stuff.  And though he doesn't build often he loves tools so I'll prob get something at home depot.  I know hes gonna want the new PS4 but the guy hardly plays video games I cant justify buying it.  His B-Day is 12/7 so I better get on buying something.

For Me:  I like to add things to my amazon wish list all the time.  I currently have some sneakers on there, and I need a purse thats not a diaper bag.  I would love a gift cert to my salon to get my hair done because I haven't been able to justify doing it since I wasn't working the past 5 weeks.

Play kitchen gets a lot of use, just not necessarily as its intended purpose.

Yeah, I bet. We just visited some friends who are on their second play kitchen. They said their kids destroyed the first one. Not even sure how that happens. And yet DD1 tried to climb into a play kitchen at a toy store once.
  • LO got a college savings account that we, the grands, great grands, and great-great grands are contributing to. She'll get some clothes and books too, but no more toys, the house seams are bursting already!

DH, LO, and I are going to a destination wedding in February. We are gifting each other the travel expenses because it falls outside our usual vacation plan.
