Breast Pump ordered through Dr

I just found out my insurance covers breast pumps ordered through my Dr's office or hospital at 100% but i have no idea how to go about ordering one. (With DD #1 we just bought a Medela double electric at BRU.) Has anyone done this yet? They said we can get it before the baby comes so i want to get it son incase the benifit (or out plan) changes next year.

By the way, thanks to everyone who posted about calling their insurance to see it pumps were covered, i never would have thought to ask and none of the info I'd received mentioned this extra benifit!

Re: Breast Pump ordered through Dr

  • I'm lurking from D13, but I just ordered mine.  To find out what to do, I called my insurance company and found out what they required.  For me (through Cigna), I had to call their durable medical equipment (DME) company and request the number to fax the rx to.  I had to wait until 32 weeks per my insurance, but they said it should only take 5-7 business days to show up at my door!  Hope this helps.

  • I got my prescription from my Dr, but then had to call insurance company to get list of providers (medical supply companies). I am now working exclusively with one of these companies like you would a pharmacy. Hope this helps!

They said the same to me too but I ordered mine anyway through the durable medical equipment site and it came within a month. I'm switching insurance in january too so if I were you, I'd still try!

  • I also have united, and was told they cover a basic model and I could upgrade for a fee. I went through Accelleron (a medical supply company). All I had to do was fill out a form, have my doctor fill the prescription portion, and fax it to Accelleron. They contact United, get the details, then call to tell me what my options are. Then they ship it for free.

  • That's great maybe united will still
Cover it with my plan I really hope so!! How do I order through a medical company with bcbs? They told me it we covered and then said the baby had to be here first I was confused my friend just had her baby and she got a free medela breast pump through bcbs it's so very nice :)
  • I asked my insurance about how to get it for free, they said I would have to wait 2 months before my EDD. So I asked my dr and he said he would give me a prescription. He did. I sent to the number the insurance provided and my breast pump arrived last week.
Call the insurance, they are supposed to tell u exactly what to do to make sure it arrives on time. :)

  • I called my insurance and they told me two places I can go and gave me the model number of the breast pump. They said I just go to one of those two places and buy the pump and then there is a form on my insurances website that I fill out and then they will reimburse me the money.

  • @AlexJonesStory08
We also have United Healthcare so I'd check with your new policy. Hope it is coveres on your plan too!

When I called the customer service number they told me it was covered at 100% if purchased through a network dr or hospital. I asked if there was a cetain company to order from, brand/model of pump or price limit and they said no. Seems odd to have no reatrictions! so I wanted to see what everyone's experience has been. I guess I'll call my Dr's office tomorrow and see if they know...

  • I was able to get the prescription from my doctor, walk into a medical supply store that my insurance accepts and walk out with one. It was surprisingly easy. The lady at the medical supply store told me that all insurance companies were just recently required to cover pumps. I hadn't heard that anywhere else but I try to tell most people and it ends up being true so far :)

  • @herewego2 - I have no restrictions and am covered for any model plus 3 months hospital grade pump if I want/need it. (Crazy but yay!) During my BF class last week the LC said this is common now. She mentioned a lot of these changes happened in the past month or so.
