car rides

my 4 month old absolutely hates car rides . from the moment the door closes till I get to my destination she will scream on the top of her lungs,. I cant go anywere unless shes sleeping.

any help ?

Re: car rides

  • Is she in an infant seat?  Some kids really prefer a convertible because it sits up a little more.  What about white noise or cracking the window to make sure she's not getting too hot?

  • ive tried opening the window for her and putting a baby cd on and nothing :(

  • Mine wailed 95% of the time in her infant seat. Nothing helped, so we tried her in a convertible and now she wails about 15% of the time.

  • My DD is very unhappy in the car, too. I just bought a travel white noise machine and it seems to be helping.

  • Have you tried letting her have her favorite toy or maybe something that lights up and plays music to distract her, at least for a little while. My son loves looking at himself, maybe a mirror?

I'm lucky to not have this problem, good luck!

  • I am so glad I am not the only one with this issue! She is fine being in the car seat when we are out of the car. As soon as I click the seat into the base she screams until I lift the carseat out again. If my DH and I are together than one of us sits in the back with her and she is fine. But most of the time I am alone driving with her and so she cries. I usually wait till she is sleeping and throw her in the car and then she usually sleeps the whole time, but if she is awake when we leave, it's torture! I still haven't figured out how to get her to stop crying.

  • Same here with my 3 month old. He has always hated the car. I might have to try the convertible seat... We have to time our car rides just right - usually nap time is the only way we can get a quiet ride. But I do have the travel sound spa (white and orange, $10-12, I think), which seems to help. We have also used white noise on the radio and we sing to him. It's always something different that works for us.
  • We totally had this problem. What helped us is: we have a picture of a lighthouse in our living room that our LO just loves (it is red with black squares). So I made an 8 x 10 copy of it and taped it to the back of the seat. Car rides are so much better now. (Then we had the issue that it was dark and she couldn't see her picture...so we put in an LED light - anything to stop the SCREAMING!)

So is there anything your LO loves to look at? We also have a mirror so I can see her, but she also can see herself too, so she enjoys that. I wish you luck! Let me know if you would like a copy of the picture!

  • I used to get really anxious about this when our baby was younger. We use a capsule and I think maybe when they're smaller, they're not the best position for their little Tummys. We'd always travel with my husband driving and me in the back with baby. If she got upset we'd try soothing with a dummy/paci (only time i'd give her one). Would usually work and then shed sleep. From about 3 months I got brave enough to drive alone with her and she's been good. Still has a meltdown now and again but often it's before she falls asleep! Keep at it until she gets used to it, if there's any music she likes to hear in the house that mighty help too. Good luck :-)
