Hitting

My 13 month old is starting to hit and through major tantrums when he doesn't get his way. He is also starting to bite more, we tell him no sternly but he just continues to do it over and over again. I don't want to spank him or swat his hand at all because I don't think that helps solve the problem. Can someone help us! I feel like a horrible mom who doesn't know what she is doing.

Re: Hitting

  • I have no advice /help... we are in the same boat!  It's so frustrating, when DS does this I hold him on my lap and won't let him down (kind of like a timeout).  He hates it but hopefully we are getting through to him.

  • DD was like that.  I often think the ignoring approach works well at this age.  I'd give her a very sad look.  And without saying a word I'd set her down and walk away.  I'd keep my back turned until they came back to me.  If they were calmer I'd say something like there's my happy baby. Hitting/biting hurts momma. And we would return to our day.  If they began the behavior again I'd rinse and repeat.
