Babies: 6 - 9 Months

XP: Mucus/Blood in Poo @ 6 Mo

I'm going to call the Pedi this AM, but wanted to hear any insight from you gals.

I have noticed over the past few days LO's poo has gotten mucusy. As of last night it is very mucusy and has very small traces of blood.

He doesn't take any formula. Just BM and rice cereal. He started the rice cereal about a month ago. Honestly, I don't think I can say how long there has been mucus because I'm afraid I wasn't looking for it.

He did have a couple days last week when he didn't poo for 48 hours and seemed pretty uncomfortable after the first 24 hours. I'm pretty sure the heavier mucus started after this.

He has also been congested for a couple weeks and has had a diaper rash for a couple weeks. The rash has gotten worse over the weekend. He had two green, mucus poos in a row last night. He also seems to be going a lot more frequently. Other then that they are yellow. His poo has always been yellow watery and not seedy, with an occasional green one.

Any ideas for the sudden onset of this at just shy of 6 months? He hasn't had 6 mo. vacs yet, scheduled for Friday.

Thx for reading all this.

Re: XP: Mucus/Blood in Poo @ 6 Mo

  • I don't know for sure but mucous and blood in poop is a sign of milk protein intolerance.  My daughter reacts if I ingest any dairy (I BF).  She would poop many times a day (15plus), it was also very liquidy, green etc.

I don't know if it would suddenly start at 6months though...as my daughter showed symptoms from day 1.  I cut out all dairy and it took 3-4 weeks but she is fine since (unless I slip up and eat dairy).

I would think that if that is how babies react to milk intolerance they may react that way to other food intolerances/allergies.  So maybe he is reacting to the rice cereal?

  • That's kind of what I was thinking. Doc said it is probably viral but if it persists they will do a stool sample and have me eliminate some dairy.

His poor little tummy is so upset, wish there was more I could do now!
