Pregnant after IF

How much weight are you gaining each week?

I am 27 weeks 5 days today. My nurse weighs me every Sunday. This past week I gained 7 pounds! The week before I gained nothing, and the week before that I gained 4. I knew upon entering 3rd tri I should expect to gain more, but 7 pounds in one week has me worried that my preeclampsia could be getting worse. My doctor didn't really seem concerned though, which should be comforting I know, but I'm still worried. Have any of you gained this much in one week? How much are you typically gaining per week?
TTC since June, 2011 with anovulatory PCOS, 1 blocked tube, and mild MFI
3rd cycles clomid + Ovidrel = BFN
4th cycles letrozole/Ovidrel + IUI = BFN
IVF #1 = BFP! Twins due 2/5/2014

Re: How much weight are you gaining each week?

  • hmm, i haven't really done it per week, but let me think.  I've gained 37 pounds total so far (28 weeks tomorrow) and gained 28 of them by week 24.  So that's 9 pounds in 4 weeks so I'm guessing 2-3 pounds per week?  I would think that anything over 4-5 pounds may be extra fluids?  Hope its not your preeclampsia, maybe babies are just getting chubby!!!!  Thinking of you and glad they are still cooking. :)

  • I am 23w2d and have only gained about 15 pounds so far, but some days I gain 3-4 pounds of what I assume is water weight because it is not there anymore when I wake up.  My weight is fluctuating between 135-140.

  • With DD I had only gained 4 by 20 weeks, so ob increased my calorie intake. Then I gained 12 more by the next appointment 4 weeks later, so I could have gained that much in a week, but I'm not sure since I wasn't weighing in weekly. And that was with only 1 baby! You have two cooking away. I wouldn't worry :)

I'm sure everything's fine!  One thing to keep in mind is that if you start cutting way back to avoid gaining too much, your body might start metabolizing your fat stores to give you and babies the energy they need to grow.  In the What to Expect Multiples book, Dr Luke says toxin byproducts are released through the placenta when you burn fat stores.  Not good for baby.  Not especially good to drastically lose weight while breastfeeding, either.  The best course of action for babies (especially multiples) is to make sure babies get enough nutrients, don't worry about weight gain, and then work on losing it later, when babies are born and healthy.  :)  She also says, however, that the best strategy with multiples is to gain the majority of your weight in the 2nd tri, and to slow down in the 3rd - this technique somehow helps babies stay in there longer.  Sorry, I'm a reader and a teacher - it comes naturally... I probably read too much!!  Good luck!!!
