Vacation

If just you and DH, would you do somewhere warm for rest and relaxation (ie southern FL), or somewhere adventurous with culture (ie NYC - my H has never been)?

We have plane vouchers ($600/ea) from when W was in the hospital and we missed our vacation last year.  DH and I want to go on a trip sans-kid, probably Feb or March.  I'm assuming continental US.

I want to book it, but I'm so torn.

Re: Vacation

  • In February I'd do warm hands down. I love Marco Island in FL. Besides I feel like rest and relaxation is what I would want for my first adults only trip.

Napa! Fly into San Fran so you can do a few big city things too. March in FL screams spring break to me and not romance.

  • Ok, so what will be warm and awesome in February?

    Marco Island?

    Key West?

  • If it's winter, I'd opt for anywhere warm. :-)  I'm with @hmp1--I'd go somewhere a little more off the beaten path so you're not overwhelmed with shenanigans.  Lake Tahoe, San Padre Island, Napa.  All of them sound great to me!

  • In Feb/March I would definitely do someplace warm.  By that time of the winter, I'm worn out and tired of being cold and just want to escape somewhere--I don't feel very adventurous.  :P

I suppose you could go for something warm but still less touristy/beachy/loungey--but I admit I'm not an expert there, but yeah, FL is like spring break central in March.

We did Marco Island in February a few years ago (why I suggested it), it was beautiful and there were very few people on the beach. We also did a day trip to the Everglades so that was a fun little adventure. We did a really fun little boat trip and had dolphins jumping our wake for over an hour. So much fun.

  • Me and H are not the norm. We would go shoot automatic weapons in Texas. Or go to Alaska to hunt and fish. Or go north and go snowmobiling. Go to the Everglades to hunt alligator and drive an airboat.
  • ok ok anti-spring breakers.  I think you are forgetting that I love to party!  College guys will appreciate my jiggly ass.

But I think we're thinking early to mid February.  So, that eliminates the SB problem, yes?

See, I would love adventure stuff.  Alaska, Texas, Everglades.... minus the hunting (not because I'm against it, but because neither of us hunt and both of us would die).  But I'm kinda thinking we probably NEED a relaxing time to reconnect more than anything else.  I want to go whitewater rafting and hiking with DH next summer.  If I'm not KU.

  • Definitley somewhere warm. I'd go to Florida. I've heard amazing things about the Keys and that is next on our list of places to go. Anna Maria Island is nice too. We are going to Disney at the end of February with LO. I'm jealous! ;)

  • I get that. If it were just me I would wan relaxing. My husbands relaxing is not the same as mine. He doesn't vacation well. We went to Cozumel on our honeymoon. He was like a caged animal.
  • I love Key West.  It's great.
But keep your purse on you at all times and don't put anything down.  We have gotten robbed 2 out of the 5 times we've been to Key West by inadvertently putting something down and turning our heads.

@barefootcontessa no joke, we were on a plane with a honeymooning couple that was on a plane to St. John [USVI], but their hotel was booked in St. Johns [Antigua].  EEEEEK!  They thought it was the same place!  I was almost crying for them.  How terrible.

Partying in Feb? Go to Mardi Gras.

ETA: I would imagine Key West does a pretty fun Mardi Gras bash too.

That is freakin interesting.... I guess I wouldn't have pegged it as a pickpocket place.  But I guess anywhere heavy with tourists and Q-tips (old people) would be a prime spot.

The places you have stayed @marisakathleen.... any you would recommend, or the opposite?

I'm from Florida and desperately miss it, so my vote is on Florida. South Beach is tons of fun and you can make a day trip to The Keys. I'm also a big fan of Sanibel, but it may not be enough of a party for you.
Oh shoot, I'm all talk.  I had a few drinks last night and might die.  I really want to take a nap on the beach, and eat seafood.  That's all.  ;)  My ego wants to party, but I just don't have it in me.

And pricey.  You could probably do Hawaii for the same cost from THTs location.  And it's still chilly (60's) 'round those parts in February. :)

Marquesa Hotel https://www.marquesa.com/ it's a little expensive, but it's centrally located and really homey feeling.  There's also a Marriott there, and I believe a Hyatt.  Definitely check out VRBO.com too.  The homes there are so cool.  That's what we want to do next time we head down there.

  • Somewhere warm. You'd have to go to south FL truly warm in feb. I'd recommend hopping through the keys. Key largo, islamorada, key west etc.

DH and I just got back from Puerto Rico. That was beautiful. I think I prefer Aruba though.

  • I would go someplace warm but still someplace with things to do. DH hates just laying around the beach. He is way too social and needs to be doing things. (Hmmm..wonders where DS gets that from! lol).

We did California for our honeymoon and would go there or Florida if I could choose. We also spent a week and half last year in Phoenix which was good too.
