getting the nursery to smell fresh

I have the diaper dekor and no matter what i feel like the room still smells of dirty diapers. I have the munckin arm and hammer nursery freshners but they do nothing-i feel like they don't even work.  Any advice on how I can get their room to smell better and be safe.

Re: getting the nursery to smell fresh

  • Empty the diaper pail more often? Not trying to be snarky, but I don't think there is any way to eliminate the poop smell other than to eliminate the poop. When our toddler poops, we just put it in a plastic bag and take it straight outside to the trash can on the curb. There is no masking that odor!

  • yah i feel like we are always emptying it but maybe we just take the poop diapers outside like you said instead of putting in the diaper dekor bc it really doesn't work that well!
  • We have the dekor as well. Using the dekor bags but we throw poppy diapers in a plastic shopping bag first. I also threw a baking soda box in the bottom. I only smell badness when I actually open the pail to throw in a diaper

And yes we empty it twice a week.

  • We just take the dirty diapers out to the trash right away.  Wet ones go in the pail and don't seem to stink.

  • we have a diaper genie. agree with PP, we change the bag often - I also throw a fresh-scent dryer sheet in the bottom of the bucket and throw in a new one it every 2 weeks or so.

  • We use a small metal trash can with a lid. It's the right size to use Target/grocery bags. We empty it every 2-3 days and we don't have problems with smells... Yet. But he mostly has breastmilk. We MIT have to reevaluate when his poos get way worse.

  • We use cloth diapers and put them in a wet bag that hangs on the door knob. His room doesn't smell at all. I take the bag out to wash them every other day... granted, if the diaper is really messy, I take it straight to the laundry room.

We still have a diaper genie since we didn't plan on CDing, so I use that for disposable wipes when we use them. We hardly ever have to empty that now.

We CD too and use a wet bag for all diapers. We always keep the wet bag unzipped. This seemed very counterintuitive to me initially, but it seems like the air getting to the diapers really helps.  I very rarely walk in to my daughter's room and notice a smell from her diapers. We wash three times a week, so basically every other day. On the occasion that we use disposables I still use the wet bag and have not noticed any problems.
  • We have the Dekor as well. I put a dryer sheet in the bottom, which helps. I also put a baby powder sachet on top of the hutch in her room by the pail, so I usually get a whiff of baby powder.

  • If it's a really nasty diaper, it goes right outside. Otherwise we empty our dekor every few days. We have these little arm and hammer air fresheners that I put in the bottom. We also keep an air freshener on his book shelf for the room which is by the trash can.

  • The key to getting rid of smell is actually air circulation. If you have a closed container it just festers and builds up. The second you open it BAM - poop smell. We use an open can and empty it every 2-3 days and have absolutely no smell. We also have an air purifier in the room that does an amazing job of keeping the air nice and fresh.

Weird, but true. I agree with @OhSewCrafty 's point about the air circulation too.
