One & Done: Only child

One and done hightlights of the week. Add yours!

For those that are feeling down or struggling here are my "highlights!" 1) no issue finding the time to work out 4 times this week! 2) ds asked to join another activity and no worries with time or money so answer is yes! 3) DH got to go to his sports meet today while myself and ds enjoyed a nice stress free swim at the local pool ( you did not want to witness to hot mess in the change room with the parents of multiple children LOL) feel free to add yours!

  • Oh, I like this thread! Trick or treating was easy with one. I often watch parents dropping off multiple kids and remind myself how easy it is to just get ds off to school.

  • Two things stick out for me:
Saturday I had an awesome day with Cooper! We hung out, built blanket forts, played, he took a fantastic nap, we went grocery shopping with no issues. I work M-F and probably would have been a lot more burnt out trying to wrangle 2 all day after a full week of work.

The other thing is realizing on Sunday that I can finally donate/sell the stuff he is outgrowing. I've been storing it all "just in case" and sorting and storing everything is a pain. I can't wait to get rid of it and free up some space. Especially the huge baby things (swing, jumper, etc.)

We are able to run multiple errands over the weekend. DD is great while we are out and we only have her to worry about. :)
This!  And it is so much easier have to only need one cart at the grocery store (since they are only made to seat 1 child).  The 3 of us are always able to shop together.
I always silently praise the people with 2+ in the grocery store while also saying a silent prayer of thanks that I'm not in the 2+ shoes. One is plenty enough to handle in a store on some days!

  • We don't need such a big house!
Saving money on a mortgage, taxes, utilities, etc etc gives us more finances to go on vacations & put away for our future!
(this brought to you by us selling our first home at the end of this month. It's way too big for us now that we know we're only having one kiddo & I'm really looking forward to downsizing.)
Completely agree. My H and I majorly downsized from our rental when we bought our house. I LOVE living in a smaller place. It is so much easier to clean! We would have had to buy a bigger house if we had another LO.

  • We can buy a great house that's actually affordable (real estate in Massachusetts is NO joke... ugh).  We put in an offer on an adorable 3 bedroom today and I'm on pins and needles waiting to hear!  It's nice to look at a place and say, yep, this is IT...without wondering what we'd do if our family grew.
  • Able to have DS in a private school.  Would not be able to that with multiple kids.  More money to purchase our dream home---with two kids, we would have to "settle" for a different type of home.

  • Okay this is not related to being OAD, but L tried standing up alone several times last night!  He fell over laughing after about four seconds.  We're so excited!

i see this as related because you do get to experience parenthood as part of OAD and all the wonderful moments, if it was all money, lifestyle and free time we woul be childfree folks! I love getting exprience all the perks while maintaining a balance. Those firsts are so special and another bonus is you take the time to savour it!
  • My DD had a complete melt down last night at bedtime. Like, totally lost it for a good 20 minutes. I had DH's full help with it because neither of us had to leave to take care of our other kid.
  • Side note about real estate- I wish we would have bought a one story..... I am having major stair regret, but we have only had our house for a year, and we have major equity. Although the equity is a good indication that we would do well during a sale, I wouldn't want to turn around and pay an increased price on another home. :(

  • My husband was out of town over the weekend and my son woke up vomiting in the middle of the night.  I was able to spend the entire day relaxing with him without worrying about trying to juggle a second or worrying that I would be cleaning vomit x 2!
  • I don't have to worry about finding a babysitter who can handle more than one kid. And our nights out are subsequently cheaper.

  • We just got back from a weekend out of town. DD was great on the whole trip (including a flight delay, thanks to the storms yesterday.) I told DH it's time to start planning for Europe in the spring. ;)
