So this may be a silly question and may be too early to be thinking about but I have been so I'm going to ask. I live in PA and March can be super cold, snowy, etc. I understand there shouldn't be alot of fabric between the baby and the carseat so I've ruled out the car seat covers that actually line the carseat (as I read it's a safety hazzard). So I was thinking about the covers that cover like a shower cap. But is that warm enought to bring baby home in (knowing that the car will be warmed up, he will be in a sleeper, hat, etc)?

Yeah, save yourself the extra money and just use a blanket. Buckle baby in snugly and then tuck the blanket around him/her.
I was given a 'shower cap' style cover when I had DS last winter. We could put an extra blanket over him if it was super cold. (I wouldn't have bought it though, but it worked well)
This time we will have the cap again, as well as blankets when necessary.

I have a shower cap style and I love it. It works great. I also live in PA. Used it all winter. You can easily get a fleece PJ and then put a small blanket on top and then this, but with the flap covered and warmed car, its unlikely you need to be extreme.
I have this one. -

You are right the bundleme's that go behind the baby are not safe, nor approved for a moving vehicle. JJcole does have one that is showercap style, but not as easy to find.

A fleece bunting is ok. Fleece and straight wool coats are the only safe options for car seats.
Here is a great article
