Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sleep training does not work with this one

So we've been sleep training since ds was about 5 months old. We took away the paci and did CIO for naps and bed. All of the books say that they should get the hang of it by night 4 or 5. Well we're on month 3 or so and he still cries before every.single.nap.and.bedtime. It's awful. I can nurse him to sleep but I don't feel like that's fair to daycare who puts him down to nap twice a day or to DH who has to put him to bed sometimes. I think a big part of it is that he just wants to suck, but since wetookmthe paci away I can't see reintroducing it at 8 months old. Sometimes at daycare he'll cry for. Few minutes or it at all. But tonight he's been crying for a good 15. He's full, clean and it's warm and cozy in bed. I think a big part of it might just be tht he wants ME. he knows im here and at daycare its easier because im not there. make sense? Anyone else in the same boat?

  • Here are some gentle sleep training resources that might help. If it's been going on so long though, you may to just do what takes for sleep (will he sleep with you?) and try again in a few months. https://evolutionaryparenting.com/gentle-sleep-resources/

  • Children have different routines and needs with different people and different places.  Daycares are fully trained and capable of putting a baby down for a nap that is used to being nursed to sleep.

You are entering the most challenging months for sleep (8-12ish) so do what you need/want to get baby to sleep and don't focus too much on how others will but him down.  If baby is spending all day in daycare it is natural that he will want to have mom close to him and want to be nursed to sleep.

  • I did sleep training at 10 months with DD#1 (Ferber's progressive waiting).  I never told daycare to change how they put her to sleep. I would imagine most of the time they rocked her to sleep which never had any negative effects on going to sleep on her own at home. I nursed right before bed but made sure she was awake before putting her in the crib. She was and still is fussy for a 15 or so minutes before she goes to sleep. When someone else put her to bed the only thing that changed was she got a bottle instead of a boob.

I still rock DD#2 to sleep at 8 months and co sleep the when she wakes in the middle of the night. I will probably do progressive waiting with her down the road too but for now it's still working.
