Potty training and accidents

I started potty training my DD around July (she turned two). She took her diaper off one day because it had poop in it and refused to let me put another one on her. She wanted to wear panties and use the potty. "Great!" I thought and so I started potty training her. We did naked time during the day and diapers for naps and bedtime. She had her share of accidents in the beginning, but did seem to be making improvement and catching on.

Here we are 4 months later and she is still having "pee accidents" 3-5 times (or more) a day in her panties/pants. By accidents I mean anything from her panties are slightly damp to her panties and pants are soaking wet. She doesn't wet enough to make a mess on the floor just her panties and pants.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

She pees ALL. DAY. LONG. Like she needs to go every 20-30 minutes. She meets all the other readiness signs except holding her bladder for 2 hours no matter how much she drinks. Also, she takes herself to the potty but it is usually AFTER some has gotten in her panties. 100% of the time she asks to poop in the potty with no accidents in her pants in over a month or two. Due to family history of a bladder problem we have been to a pediatric urologist and everything (bladder, kidneys, etc) looked normal on the ultrasound/x ray and the dr isn't concerned.

Question:
I am due with DD2 in 4 weeks. Would you go back to pull-ups for the time being and wait another couple of months (she would be 2.5 by then) or would you continue potty training with all the accidents? Is it normal to have this many accidents a day this far into potty training? Any advice?

Re: Potty training and accidents

  • 3-5 big accidents a day would probably make me think she wasn't quite ready. But if it's just a little pee in her underwear, it could be she starts and is aware enough to stop and hold it. Are you currently using an incentive for going potty? Maybe time to change it up and give her something new to work towards? When DS was going through a regression, we made up a little game board w/ a picture of a race car. Every time he used the potty, he moved his car forward a space (we just started w/ 10 to make it attainable). When he reached the finish line, he got to pick out a new Hot Wheels car at the store (since he loves cars). If he peed in his pants or on the floor, he had to move his car backwards a space.

I agree that if she doesn't want to wear diapers, you just need to plug ahead with the training, but honestly if when the new baby comes she's still having that many accidents I (myself, because I know how overwhelming it would be for me personally) would probably do Pull-Ups for convenience and re-visit it once things were settled again.

  • I would go back to diapers. 4-5 accidents a day means she's not ready to PT. No way would I clean up all that pee, esp with a newborn. 2.5 is still pretty young...give it a rest.
