Bringing baby home

So this may be a silly question and may be too early to be thinking about but I have been so I'm going to ask.  I live in PA and March can be super cold, snowy, etc.  I understand there shouldn't be alot of fabric between the baby and the carseat so I've ruled out the car seat covers that actually line the carseat (as I read it's a safety hazzard).  So I was thinking about the covers that cover like a shower cap.  But is that warm enought to bring baby home in (knowing that the car will be warmed up, he will be in a sleeper, hat, etc)?

Re: Bringing baby home

  • We used a Bundle Me as well - have it ready for this one if it is cold in March. The key is not to have anything between the straps and the baby like a snowsuit.

  • I have a shower cap type one and we live in a typically cold winter climate (averaging -25 to -30). Anyway, once the baby is clipped in, you can bundle the baby with a blanket (over the straps) and put a hat on them. That with the car seat cover should be good!

  • I had a cover like you mentioned with DD and loved it. Was able to  buckle  securely and then toss on a blanket and she was warm as could be. Also helpful in snowy or rainy weather.

Interestingly, I'm also in PA and was just shopping with my mother and grandmother today and we (okay, they--I have no idea what I'm doing!) opted for two layers, a footed single and a thin fleece bunting with a hood, plus a couple different blankets of varying weights that could be used to cover her depending on if it's a cold day in March or a warm one. Dunno if it's the final outfit coming home outfit choice (I've left that up to my mom and gma, so I have a feeling MANY outfits will be purchased between now and then!), but the layering made sense to me.

But I'm a FTM and all the other babies in our families were born in summer… so we'll see how well we've chosen!

ETA: to clarify, we would use the blankets outside the straps!

  • I really liked the "shower cap" cover. It was super easy to take on and off. If you think you need more warmth you can put a small blanket inside the cover while walking outside and then take it out in the car.

  • I'm in Texas and it should be pretty warm by the time this LO gets here. I have a light cover for the car seat, but I may not even need it.

Yeah, save yourself the extra money and just use a blanket. Buckle baby in snugly and then tuck the blanket around him/her.

  • We used and will use the bundle me. I'm in pa also and you could always just cover baby with a blanket if you weren't comfortable with a bundle me type option. They aren't outside for long if you have someone picking you up once you are discharged so it's not going to be too big of a deal if it's cold.
  • I agree with the pp just use blankets over the straps. Also make sure you bring a light weight outfit as well. When I had DS it was 45 degrees in early April. The day we left the hospital it was 78. We ended up just taking him home in a onesie with light pants.
  • I just used blankets for DD 12 years ago, late summer.

I was given a 'shower cap' style cover when I had DS last winter. We could put an extra blanket over him if it was super cold. (I wouldn't have bought it though, but it worked well)

This time we will have the cap again, as well as blankets when necessary.
  • Why is the bundle me not good for carseat use in a moving vehicle?

  • I live in Michigan and my son was born in December. We had a fleece outfit from Target (fleece pants and a hoodie), and then just put blankets on after he was secured in the seat. It worked well.

  • I've modified Bundle Me type products more than once for friends without sewing machines, it's very easy.  You either cut open the bottom layer and remove the padding or just entirely cut out the section that goes behind baby (basically cut the section between the strap holes out) then sew the raw edges.  As long as only very thin fabric or no fabric is between baby and the seat they're safe to use.  That's what I'll be doing.

I have a shower cap style and I love it.  It works great. I also live in PA. Used it all winter. You can easily get a fleece PJ and then put a small blanket on top and then this, but with the flap covered and warmed car, its unlikely you need to be extreme.

    I have this one. -

You are right the bundleme's that go behind the baby are not safe, nor approved for a moving vehicle. JJcole does have one that is showercap style, but not as easy to find.

  • So is bunting a no-no when they're buckled in the car seat?

A fleece bunting is ok. Fleece and straight wool coats are the only safe options for car seats.

    Here is a great article

  • We had the shower cap style cover and it was awesome!  If its really cold just put a blanket over baby after you buckle him in and then the cover over that!

  • Hat, mittens, socks and booties with a couple blankets would be my plan, but then again I'm in Oklahoma.
