Multiples

your birthing experience

Good morning!

I've been reading a lot of books to try to get an idea of what I've got myself into here :-)

In one book, Twins 101, the author says that twin births take place in an operating room, regardless of if you're doing a vaginal or c-section birth. Only the husbands are allowed in and babies are taken away immediately after birth by the pediatrician, and if necessary, taken to NICU.

Did you find this to be true with delivering twins? What was your experience?

Thank you!

Re: your birthing experience

  • I work on a Labor and Delivery floor and we have our multiple moms deliver in the OR even if vaginally in case we have to do a STAT c/s.  The father is allowed in the room only.  After the babies are born we then take them to the nursery.  The father follows.   Now we don't have a NICU because we are a small hospital soo if they are really early or have any difficulties we have to transfer the babies. But if all is okay the mom can hold her babies after she comes out of the OR and we do recovery in the patients room.

  • I did deliver in the OR just incase. My husband & mom were in the room. Each baby had their own warmer & nurse in the room. They were not taken away. I held them both before being moved back to the room I labored in.

  • I had a scheduled c section and was in an OR. Both babies were born crying and had no problems on room air. I was able to hold them after they were born. Then they were taken to the nursery while they finished with me. My husband went with them and they came to be with me in recovery about an hour later. Then we all went to my post partum room together.

  • I haven't delivered yet but my doctors have given me a thumbs up to deliver in a normal room if both babies are head down.
  • I delivered in an OR with a window that went straight to the NICU. I'm glad I did because I ended up delivering baby b with an emergency c section. I did not get to hold my babies because they went straight to the NICU. They were born at 32 weeks 4 days.
  • I delivered vaginally in the OR as a precaution. Was just DH and I and they did take the girls to the nursery fairly soon after delivery. They did bring them over for me to see for a minute or two but then were taken to nursery. DH went with babies while they finished with me in the OR, had to stitch up from episiotomy.
  • I was looking at two diff hospitals to deliver at and both required delivery in the OR regardless.

My birth experience was scary. My water broke spontaneously at 34w at 445pm at work. I got to the hospital, was checked, and it was discovered that baby a's cord had prolapsed (he was breech). I had an immediate c/s under general anesthesia and the boys were born at 604 and 605pm.

H missed the entire thing - he didn't get to the hospital until close to 630. He was there when I woke up in recovery.

The boys were taken to the NICU and I didn't get to see them until the next morning.

  • I had a csection because baby a was breech, if i was able to do a vaginal birth I would have delivered in an OR anyway.

In our hospital they got the babies all cleaned up and did the testing in a room right off the OR. They got to stay with us the entire time and went to recovery with us. Only H was in the room with me. We did send them to the nursery at night. I delivered at 36 weeks 2 days.
  • I did wind up getting an emergency c section for pre eclampsia. DH was there he got to see and hold our daughters, take pictures etc. He brought each baby to me to see as they were putting me back together. The babies where taken away after while I was in recovery because they were cold and had low blood sugar. I did not see them until after I was in my room for a while, first one was brought to me than a few hours later the other was, after that they did not leave me until my younger had to go back to NICU for a bit. It was not the birth experience of my dreams.I would have loved to have done skin to skin and breastfed right away, however my babies where healthy and that's the most important thing of course. Just be prepared for things not going according to plan, talk to the nurses and doctors and don't be afraid to ask many questions. They are your babies, if there are certain things you feel strongly about let them know, as long as it is safe for the babies they should accommodate you, good luck!

  • I had a vaginal delivery and also delivered in the OR.  I had my doc and nurse and then each of the babies had two NICU nurses (they were born at 34w6d).  I delivered them 16 minutes apart (repair work in between as the dr called it :) ) and I was able to hold them each immediately after delivering them.  Because they were breathing well on their own, they stayed in the OR for 5 minutes or so before they were taken to the NICU for evaluation.
  • On the L&D unit where I work all twins are delivered in the OR regardless of if it's a c-section or vaginal delivery. If babies are stable we keep them in the OR with mom and they go with her to recovery. If there are any issues they will go to the NICU for assessment/treatment. I'd ask your OB at your next appointment what your hospital's policies are. We also only allow one support person in the OR.

  • Thank you guys! I'll definitely be asking my OB on Tuesday and later touring the hospital. I'm just curious what others have experienced and it sounds like many hospitals are different. Thanks again!

  • My ob delivers all twins in the or. My boys were delivered vaginally at 33w2d. They were immediately taken to the nicu. I was able to kiss baby b before he was taken.

  • I ended up with a c/s at 34w4d. I believe twins at the hospital I would have delivered at deliver twins in the OR. I feel like I would have froze in the OR had I had a vaginal delivery. I was freezing walking in there.

  • I delivered them vaginally in an OR.  I was allowed to push for Baby A in my L&D room, but I was moved to the OR once she was about to crown.  I did all of Baby B's delivery in the OR.  They were 6.5 weeks premature so the NICU team took them immediately to a room right off of the OR to evaluate them.  Once they were done, one of the NICU nurses brought each baby over to us for a couple minutes so DH and I could see them.  But they took them right up to the NICU after we had a chance to meet them.  I was only allowed one "support person" in the OR with me.

  • I was told I would deliver in the OR, I could have a second standby person if I wanted, in case my husband went with baby A to the nicu and I was still birthing B, but it didn't end up being an issue. They don't have a nursery in my hospital and do that all in the room. They do basic clean up in the OR and did baths in the room once we got back. I had a relatively uneventful vaginal birth with a breech extraction of baby B.
