I'm a bit CD obsessed. However, God played a horrible joke on me when he sent me DS, who is the rashiest kids I've ever seen, and can't wear them because of the different creams we have to put on him. When I was using CDs on him, prefolds (GMD are the best) and covers worked best. With DD, we used BumGenius 4.0s from 3wks through potty training. We also used fitteds with wool soakers overnight for them both. Don't buy a ton of one thing before LO arrives, as some may not be a good fit for him/her.
We LOVE cloth diapering. We used prefolds/covers to begin and then switched to BG One Size and Fuzzibunz Pockets which lasted us until she was a toddler. I love that I have my whole stash now for the second one
We use this for laundering https://rockingreensoap.com/ and I found that hanging them out to dry in the sun was the best for stains.
I also had 2 cloth diaper laundry bags so that when one got full I would just throw the bag and all into the washer and put a new bag into the hamper. I tried to build my stash so that I had enough to last me 2 days so that I would have a load in the washer/drying and then she would still have a bunch left to wear and then I would alternate.
The only thing I felt was frustrating was that we had a front load washer and I couldn't soak the diapers. Now with our 2nd I have a top loader so I am looking forward to being able to soak and add as we go.
@colleenswerb, cloth and disposable? Is that something people do?
We prefer disposables when we travel. I usually use the G diapers with disposable inserts, but will also use pampers etc. when needed. I find it easier when overseas. With family it could be different.
It would still save you money to do half/half but if you spend money on good cloth diapers I would imagine you would want to use them as much as possible.
I have friends that only CD at home and always use disposable when out in public.
@lalamama81, I was just wondering for exactly the reason (s) you stated, traveling or someone else caring for the baby. I guess it was a stupid question because it's not like the baby would have an adverse reation. I just recently was considering cd, but haven't done much else but considering.

And some DCP will not CD. Our daughter started daycare at age 14 months and at that age we sent disposables with her to daycare and still used cloth diapers at home. We found it still saved us money and it was kind of nice not having all of the laundry once I went back to work after maternity leave.
Aside from I think 1 state, no state has regulations that CDs aren't allowed. I would have probably found a daycare that didn't put up a fuss about them. Our nannies when I worked and other sitters and family have all just used the CDs w/o issue or complaint.
It's not a stupid question, it's just after using them for almost 5 years total so far you realize it's just not a big deal out and about, w/ sitters, traveling, etc. The whole point for me is to save money but also to reduce my waste, so we do it 99.9% of the time.
I find in my city DCP seem to be less likely to use them. I'm in Canada. We don't start daycare until after 1 year though so I didn't find it to be a big deal for me. If I had to put her in daycare before that then I would have tried hard to find a DCP that would do cloth diapers. We interviewed a ton of daycare/in home daycares and the ones that would do cloth we did not like so we went with the one that provided a much better program.
With this baby she/he will be around 15 months when I go back to work and my husband will be staying at home so we will be using cloth until we PT. (Minus travel)
Fitteds and wool work really well for us at night but that can get pricey and I'm lazy with the wool washing. I know a lot of people who use disposables at night.
OP, In addition to prefolds and covers (probably your cheapest option) as suggested, there are inexpensive pocket diapers with inserts (Alva, Sunbaby, Kawaii) that are easy peasy you could do. If you get aplix (Velcro) they're just as easy as disposables IMO (for dads, grandparents, daycare if they do it).
I love Bumgenius pockets and you will still save a ton even with them but they aren't as cheap. They do run "seconds" sales and you can get them cheaper that way without the inserts. I prefer to stuff mine with the Alva microfiber/bamboo inserts anyway so I always snag a few when they have that sale --> Cottonbabies.com

Thanks Ladies! So I could get a couple to try to see if I could make it work and it wouldn't be ridiculous?
Sorry to hijack your post OP!
I would certainly try first. Its not for everyone, but it really is quite easy. My husband was really unsure about it at first and with the Bum Genius Pockets especially he said it was just as easy as disposable (except that we need to launder them)
Has anyone tried the brand Thirsties? I see them on Amazon with good reviews. I think we'll try a few different brands, but just wondering if anyone was familiar...
- https://jilliansdrawers.com/products/clothdiapers/tryclothfor10 <-- Try out 8 different diaper types/brands for 21 days. The diapers are brand new, you pay a $10 deposit (plus cost of diapers), and then return those (or all) you don't like at the end of 21 days. You get your $ back in the form of store credit.
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVo6SMebcX8 <-- 7 part Cloth Diaper 101 series. She's kind of annoying, but she'll take you through all the different types of diapers, talk about pros and cons, and show you how to use them (as well as how many to buy, how to care for them, etc).
Also, while I love supporting small businesses, the diapers at Jillian's Drawers are a few dollars more expensive than if you search for them on Amazon.
I'm not sure what has already been said but we cloth diaper (we started with baby #1 who is now 3 years old and potty trained). We LOVE LOVE LOVE bumgenius elementals or freetimes. We used lil joeys AIO for baby #2 when she was a newborn. We also have alva pocket diapers. We heard such good things about the alvas but they leak a lot for us. We CANNOT use them over night, even with putting a prefold in with the insert. We have to change her every 1.5-2 hours in alvas or it will start to leak but the bumgenius can go longer (we still change her every 2 hours but it's nice to not have to worry about leaking if we are out and about). We've had the elementals since baby #1 and they are still going. We're pregnant with baby #3 and plan on using them (and buying more to get rid of the alvas). Love cloth diapering. Everything about it. I wash diapers once a day but we have a super small stash, when we buy more we'll probably wash every other day. I do NOT miss disposables, at all.
We are going to cloth. I just think its so much better for the planet... And those tiny butts in cloth diapers are so cute! If you go to the CD board there are a few posts at the top with FAQ and getting started suggestions. It's really helpful.
Thanks for all of the info. I found a site that sells alva diapers for very cheap but there are 50 in it. I think I will buy a few of a few brands and start there. Maybe I'll do that diaper trial!
