Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

When to go to the ER?

I was in the ER last night with very light red spotting. Diagnosed with a threatened miscarriage. She said come back to ER if I start bleeding heavy and cramp, isn't that going to happen anyway if I pass the fetus? So my question is, no what how bad or not so bad it is, when I pass do I have to go to the ER?

Re: When to go to the ER?

  • I would wait until Monday when you can get a hold of your doctor who will probably have you come in for ultrasound or to check HCG levels. I had bleeding that also started on a Saturday- my doc had my HGC levels tested on a Mon & Wed with f/u appt with gynocologist on Thursday that confirmed I was in process of m/c. My doctor told me that if I was bleeding/soaking one pad per hour then that would be considered an emergency. If you do start to m/ c it will be heavy with clots.

  • If you are having heaving bleeding and cramping, then I would go to the ER. My incomplete miscarriage went very fast and my dr didn't even want to see me. She sent me to the ER instead. They did an ultrasound and some tests and then I ended up having a d&c the same day. If you are not "comfortable" with the amount of bleeding and cramping, then go to the ER. If it is bearable, then you could wait it out until Monday and call your dr.

  • If you want to mc at home and are ok with no narcotics then stay home unless the bleeding is excessive and lasts a long time. If you start to feel lightheaded from blood loss or no longer want to deal with the pain then go to the ER. There is not much they can do for you except slow down excessive bleeding and give you pain meds. Sorry you're dealing with this.

  • I was 7 weeks and I never went to the ER. I didn't even know people did that.
I called my midwife's emergency number and they talked me through what was happening with my body.

I guess if you're further along then maybe the ER is a place to be, but I would just call your doctor and talk to them about it.
  • I do think however that my midwife said if it is heavier than a heavy period day then to go to the actual dr
  • I found out last Friday that I was having a mc. My dr stressed that if I started to bleed heavily to call the office & talk to the on call dr. They would either talk me through it or tell me to go to the ER. If I felt like passing out they said to go to the ER.

  • The medical rules of thumb are always:
    1. If you're soaking through (onto pants) a large maxi pad an hour
    2. You are cramping so bad you truly cannot stand..

You're losing too much blood and are dehydrated as well...

    Go to the er.
  • I was told the 1 pad an hour for more than 2 hours rule. I was also told if the pain got worse than I could tolerate to go in.

My miscarriage started with mild cramping and spotting, transitioned to bad bleeding/cramping while passing lots of clots/tissue and the sack for a couple hours. After that the bleeding and cramping slowed down but was still pretty heavy.

  • I was in extreme pain, and in pain now and am going through it. if you aren't in pain you could wait, but what you are feeling is real and if you want to go right this second, go. Don't let anyone tell you what is good for you, if we say wait it is going to drive you crazy if you feel like you need to go. Sorry you are having to deal with this too :(

Exactly- go if you feel you need. Better to be more safe.
