Free early childhood education

Hi, I used to post on this board back when DD was younger, but been on a bump hiatus.

Anyway, in the city where I live, the public schools are atrocious. They recently got provisional accreditation back. The thing is, they offer free early childhood education with free before and after care. I have heard rumors that the EC program isn't as bad as the school age program.

We tried to get her into a magnet school, but it is based on a lottery system and ended up number 58 on the waiting list for the school we wanted (probably won't get in). Our home school has an EC program, but the school itself has the lowest rating. Another parent in the area told me about another school's EC program that her kid goes to and it isn't her home school and it is great. Her kid gets special education services though, so I am not sure if she gets to have more leeway in going outside her home school.

With new LO coming, have DD in a free program would be amazing for our finances. I just fear that it will be terrible and if we pull her out of her current DC, we will lose her spot and can't switch back easily.

Anyway, has anyone had any experience with EC public school options when the school itself isn't good or going outside your home school? Any advice or suggestions?

Re: Free early childhood education

  • Milwaukee starts public school with half-day K3, but they do not provide free before and after care.  We knew we would not send our kids to public grade school but did send our first to public K3 as there was a great K3-K5 school just a few blocks from our home and we figured we might as well get some use out of the public schools.

Milwaukee has open enrollment so we can pick from any of the public schools.  Many do not provide transportation so picking one far away from home means having to figure out drop offs and pick ups on our own.  The better schools, of course, fill up quicker and may have waiting lists.

In typical Milwaukee public school fashion, they closed the good school that was close to our home so our oldest switched to a private school sooner than we had planned but we definitely would have kept him there longer had they kept they school open.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
