DD refusing a bottle!

I have to go into work on Friday and need to leave 2 bottles for DD. She has never accepted a paci and today when we tried a bottle (avent), she adamently refused that too. I've got tommee tippees, Dr browns, and the medela bottles available too and will try those as well but I'm starting to feel panicked. Plus, I don't really have a lot of expressed milk for her to try and refuse...as I pour out an ounce it adds to the defeated feeling. Anyone having a similar problem or had success with transitioning?

Re: DD refusing a bottle!

  • Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you should be able to freeze that milk instead of tossing it. Unless of course it's already sat in the fridge for several days.

  • we're you trying to give the bottle? If so you will want to try someone else giving the bottle. Also how long was the bottle tried for? Did you jump in quickly to feed when the bottle was refused?

No you are correct. You can keep milk air temp for 6 hours (8 according to some) and at least 5 days in the fridge, and a few months in the freezer can't remember how many.

The playtex vent aire with the slow nipple worked for us. The tommee tippie was way too fast fur my LO. She kept gagging!

  • Avent bottles work for us. She will act confused at first each time and shake her head, but she eventually takes it. And she won't take a paci from me, but anyone else! Have you tried havin someone else feed her?

  • My dh finallygot look to take a medela last night. It took her about 45 min to eat. My lo will be 3 weeks tomorrow.

  • I had to dump it because she had tried drinking from it. I had dh try to give the bottle, though I was sitting nearby. I did nurse her after because it was time for her to eat and she was so upset :( the only time she tried it even the littlest bit was when i held her like we were going to nurse and on her boppy. That worked for about .5 oz from the bottle, most of which came out the side of her mouth - something that never happens when nursing. I think we'll try again without me in the room with a narrower nipple and before she's very hungry. Very frustrating!!

  • I was told to be gone for the first few bottles. They know when mom is nearby.

  • I am having the same problem with bottles too. I think it has to do with the firmness of the nipple. If she has a firm nipple it doesn't pour out the side of her mouth. The best bottle for us so far has been avent.

  • If it's coming out the sides of her mouth, I'm guessing it's coming out way faster than shes used to. Also, is the milk still warm like it would be if she got it from you? I've read that some babies are very sensitive about the temperature and won't take cold milk.

  • You need to physically leave the house whole your DH does it . They can smell you otherwise

    Most definitely this.

I can't watch it, it is too hard my mama bear instinct kicks in and I want to fix it.

  • Yep, leave the house. I had to with Ds to take the bottle. Playtex drop ins are great and we eventually ended up using Avent and loving then

  • also, born free worked for us, with the slow flow nipples.

  • You can put it back in the fridge for the next feeding even after they've drank ftom the bottle. That rule is for FF.

This, definitely. I spent the time going downtown to buy cupcakes lol!
  • Get as far away as possible while yh does it. And use the slowest flow possible. Like a premie nipple.
  • And don't throw it out. Just put it in the fridge. When in doubt, do the smell and/or taste test if you are worried about bad milk.
  • I am having the same issue. I didn't realize I shouldn't be there! I am going to try that next time!!

  • The LC in the hospital told me the rule for caring for bm is 5 hours left out, 5 days in refrigerator and 5 months in freezer.

  • I had to leave the house also with my oldest when we were trying to give a bottle and also transitioning to formula from breast milk. He knew if I was even in the house and absolutely refused.
  • Thank you ladies! Always something...
