Birthday party question

I know it is early to be thinking of this, but a coworker said something the other day that I had never heard. Is it now common place to not open the gifts at the party?

Re: Birthday party question

  • I've been to 2 birthday parties in the past month. One kid was turning 2, the other was turning 1. They both opened their gifts at the party. Honestly, I think it would've been totally weird not to. Around here, I think most people like to watch the kid/parents open the gift they bought.

  • I'm doing the three year old birthday circuit and thus far none of them have opened gifts there. Maybe bc of the time and attention span they all have? No idea. I was surprised at first. As a guest I couldn't care less what they decide to do and was more wondering for my own sake.

  • I think it depends on where you live honestly. I have never been to a party where the child hasn't opened gifts. It does seem to be becoming the norm in some areas.

  • We were at a friend's party, and their two daughters' birthdays are only 8days apart so they held a joint party for both. 50 kids. Ages 6 and 2. They didn't open gifts there.

  • I've found that if it's a family party taking place at home presents get opened. I haven't been to a friends party where gifts were opened, even if it was an at-home party. Most friend parties are an hour and a half and at a place (possibly because housing is crazy expensive here so people don't have large homes with space to host lots of little kids and their parents) so there's 1 hour of activity followed by 30 mins of pizza and cupcakes then everyone leaves.

  • I just went to a 1st birthday party and they did not open gifts. But it was outside on a farm, and it was unseasonably cold, so it would have been pretty torturous to have us all sitting outside in a barn watching this LOs parents predominantly open all his gifts. But that was the first party I have been to where the gifts weren't opened. DS' party will most likely be at a VFW hall or something similar because we don't have the room in our house even for just immediate family. As of right now the plan would be to open the gifts there. Literally everyone is coming from out of state, so I think they'd like to see their gift opened while they are there.

  • We've noticed that friends who's invitations state anything along the lines of 'no gifts required, your presence is enough' tend to skip opening the gifts.
