Pregnant after IF

Home birth

Am I the only crazy human being that is considering a homebirth?

I finally told my DH and he supports me. I think my family will disown me?

Anyone else considering it?

Re: Home birth

  • I don't mean to sound like the voice of doom, so please don't take it that way. But I thought I would throw this out there. My sister had a home birth with her second son, but it didn't go well. Luckily, everything turned out okay in the long run. After her experience, I would be too worried about complications. Big babies run in our family though (he was 10 1/2 pounds, no joke), and that was part of what caused the issues. You gotta do what you're comfortable with, and I'm sure most home births are just fine though.

    Me: 42. DH: 46.

    1st Pregnancy: MC, 11/19/00.

    2nd Pregnancy: DS born 04/10/06.

    3rd Pregnancy: CP, 03/11.

4th Pregnancy: MMC, D&C 11/30/11, Genetic testing revealed Trisomy 4.

5th Pregnancy: Ectopic, 2 doses of Methotrexate unsuccessful, surgery 4/10/12, right tube removed.

Tried Letrozole January 2013-July 2013 (including 2 IUIs), all BFN.  After 2 1/2 years of trying for child #2, decided to "give up" after July cycle, based on AMA.

August 16, 2013:  BFP our first month of "not trying!"  Still in shock.  Beta #1 (14dpo): 183.  Beta #2 (17dpo):  611.  Ultrasound 8/30/13: baby measured 6 weeks, 1 day, heart rate of 118 bpm!
Ultrasound 9/13/13:  8 weeks, heart rate of 176!
    Baby is due 4/26/14

I don't think you are crazy at all! Most home births, as long as you have a low risk pregnancy, go well. We have pretty much decided on going to a birth center that has privileges at a close hospital (in case of an emergency), but I can still have an unmedicated home-birth experience. I def. feel like interventions at hospitals are out of control and I would rather be in my bed hours after delivery than a hospital for 2 days, but it's not for everyone! Watch The Business of Being Born on Netflix, it answers a lot of questions and shows both sides of the birthing experience.

Forgot to add; Yes, people might judge you because they don't understand anything outside of a hospital birth. People might get freaked out, because of the "what if there is an emergency" situation. But, your body was made to labor naturally, and women have been doing it since the beginning of time. As long as you have a good midwife, and a back up plan in case something goes wrong, I don't think anyone can think it's all that crazy.

  • I don't think you are crazy either. After all the medical interventions we have been through to get here I would really like for something about this process to be natural. However I don't think home birth is right for me. I am a huge worry wart and I don't think I could ever forgive myself if something went wrong. Plus I have this feeling that since it has been so hard to get and stay pregnant I should expect a rough pregnancy and labor. I know that's not really rational but that's how I feel now. Maybe that will change if things progress normally.
I watched The Business of Being Born and highly recommend it. It was very informative and made me more interested in wanting to go med free. Good luck with your decision.

  • Every woman should choose the environment for her birth that is most comfortable for her. If you live in a place where transfer to a hospital is safe, quick, and welcomed (meaning that hospitals are homebirth-transfer friendly), then evidence says a homebirth is as safe and possibly safer than a hospital birth. There are inherent risks in any birth, and with a great midwife you can mitigate these risks from home as well as you can at a hospital but with fewer interventions.

I'm planning a homebirth as well, and surely most of the women on this board will respect your ability to make the right choice for you. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about your homebirth planning process! I'm excited for you.

  • I have friends that did home births with their last 2 babies and everything went well, they're huge advocates. Me, there's no way, even if I was having one. I totally respect other peoples' decisions, though. I just think that with a first pregnancy, you never know what your body's going to do. A lot of women experience much easier second and third births, so maybe if it was my second (and I wasn't having twins, LOL).

  • I just mentioned this to a friend and she recommended an obgyn that delivers @ homes. He has an entire team including midwife plus takes care of planning for emergency. How cool is this! I'm definitely looking into it. Thank you everyone for your input. I'll let you know how those initial appointments go just so you know :)
  • I think that if you are comfortable with it and your doctors/midwives support it, then it is the right decision for you.  I personally wouldn't feel comfortable because I know I wouldn't be able to relax as I have no idea what is "normal" and I would always think I should be transferring to the hospital.  Having said that, if my delivery goes well with my midwife, a homebirth would be something I might consider next time.  On a board of IF'ers, I think it's safe to say you'll do your homework (as most of us research the shit out of everything).  Good Luck!
