Cereal and how to tell people that he doesn't need it.

LO hasn't had any weight gain since 2 months old and as of right now he is failure to thrive. The Pedi has added one bottle of formula a day to try to help him gain, all of his other bottles are breastmilk. Well everyone keeps saying to add rice cereal to his bottles. The Pedi hasn't even mentioned anything about rice cereal or baby food. Now my mom wants to go with me to his next appointment and I now she's going to bring up cereal and baby food. I rather not give it to him just to make him fat. I would rather give him good calories not the bad calories from the cereal. I know that most of ya'll are saying not to give it to them, would be some good reason that I could tell people that he doesn't need it?

  • Yeah, I hate that everyone is so stuck one giving the cereal.

I wouldn't resist cereal or solids if it's medically necessary. But if your pedi isn't recommending it I'd just tell the haters that your working with your doc for a solution or that you are trusting the man (or woman) with a medical degree...as far as your mom going to the appointment, if you know she's gonna ask then don't let her come?
I'll do if the pedi thinks he needs too but if not then I'm not going too.

  • I'd probably just ignore them. If I really felt compelled to say anything, it would be along the lines of, "we're doing what we think is best for _our_ child, per his pedi's recommendation. Thank you for your concern." And leave it at that. It's none of their damn business, IMO.
  • I always tell my mom (and MIL) that she hasn't had a baby in 32 years and things have changed. She doesn't pressure me about cereal though thankfully.

  • I would just tell people you are following your pediatrician's recommendations, and if they keep harping on you, I might get a little snarky and ask where they got their medical degree from. In terms of your mother, tell her she is not coming to your next appointment. You don't need more stress.
  • @redcherry1109 Here are a couple of articles that I hope help you feel better. My husband doesn't think our LO is gaining weight like he "should" and I'm sure my MIL is putting ideas in his head that we should do formula and solids instead.

This one is geared more towards newborns, but it has some good points.

This is the one I check every month for reassurance. You'll have to scroll down to the 5-6month age.

  • Tell them you think it's great that they got their medical degree so quickly but until you see a diploma they can keep the advice to themselves.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.
