Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Talk to me about toys...

My DD will be one in a week. What toys do your LOs like? Most of her toys are for the 6-9 range so I am looking to do a complete overhaul for her birthday. I am looking for stuff that will last hopefully more than 6+ months. I am pretty certain she is bored with all her toys and she needs some variety.

Re: Talk to me about toys...

  • Fisher-Price Little People are great and will last through several stages. At this stage, my son likes the garage so he can push cars up and down the ramps, but I know as he gets older he can do more of the imaginative role playing with the figures themselves. He also loves his Little Tikes mini-wagon. We keep it inside and he's always loading it up with stuff, dragging it around, and unloading. He also occasionally hops in himself and looks up at me expectantly :)
  • Loading the player...
  • I advise not to get too much. LO loves her books most, and she loves plastic food storage containers just to fill & dump. Her favorite sensory material is the dog food. She loads her containers, shoes, etc and hand feeds the dog. Very few toys get pulled out. Everything in your house is a learning tool for LO.

A few toys I'm so glad we got: her tunnel, board books, balls, magnets, 3-1 bike (we're still on stage one where she climbs on and rocks)
Toys she loved but only for a short bit: her leapfrog play table, sit&ride car, play phone (the real one is all she cares about now)

  • Her favorites are books, balls, Little People, Duplo blocks, activity cube, wheely bug, toy phone, and her talking picnic basket. She has a Little People music parade riding toy at my mom's house that she looooves. But it's loud and obnoxious, so you might want to skip that one.
  • We got our DD a play kitchen for her first birthday and she loves it!  She loves to open and close all the doors, loves to play with all the pots and pans, pretends to stir things and likes to feed me the plastic food.  She also really likes balls, her favorite is a plastic beach ball type that is about the size of a soccer ball, she kicks it all over the house.  Recently she has started liking her baby dolls and she LOVES books, we always have a dozen or so in a basket in our living room, she likes to sit in her chair and "read" them herself and she loves when we read to her.

  • DS loves to play with DD's kitchen.  He is also obsessed with balls.  Just a plain ball that he can throw and chase.

  • DS loves music toys, those that you can stack or open and close or put things in and out of. He loves the pretty basic fisher price ones... Corn popper, ring stack, shape sorter, blocks. No wonder they are the classics.

My DD got this for her first birthday and she is now almost 3 and she still plays with it everyday.  My 14 month old DS loves it as well.  It is loud (it does not have volume control or power button) but they LOVE it.  Also, books and little people are other faves that do not go out of style.
  • DS loves his mega blocks. He had about 20 pieces that came with a ride-on Jeep and he kept playing with those 20 pieces, so we got him the Whacky Wheels expansion set which has about 100 pieces. He greatly enjoys making cars and trucks out of them and it's the only thing he consistently plays with day to day.
  • DS just turned 1. His current favorites are sorting cubes, stacking cups (obsessed with dump and fill). Any toy cars and trucks that roll.  We also have had the fisher price laugh and learn house for months now, and he still plays with it every day.

And books. He really has shown a much increased interest in the past month. He'll flip the pages back and forth on his own. And he will also bring me books so I can read them to him.

DS is still in the cruising stage, and the melissa and doug alligator push toy has been a lifesaver for me.  He'll walk back and forth the living room doing laps, hence tiring himself out so he naps well!

  • Thank you for the responses!! It is much appreciated.
  • My LO turned 1 last week and she's obsessed with her "classic" wood blocks. They're all different shapes and came in a wooden box so when she's older she can start to recognize which shapes fit in which hole of the box. But for right now it's just fun taking them all out of the box and then putting them back in. She plays with it for hours.

Another thing I wasn't expecting to be as big of a hit as it has been is a set of table and 2 chairs she got (of course we made her "birthday list") It's made for 3 and up but once she figured out how to get herself into the chair she's non stop. It took 2-3 weeks of practicing with her and showing her how to get into and out of the chair safely, but now it's her favorite "toy". She climbs into the chair, sits there for about 2 minutes and then gets down and does it again. We thought it would be something she would start using throughtout the year when she's a little bigger and actually walking but she loves it. One tip if anyone does get something like this, spend the money for the wood table and chair (ours is from Pottery Barn). If we got plastic it would have been too wobbly for her, and the wood (even though it'll scratch) will last for years.

  • DS loves his books, blocks, cars, and toy phone.  He also loves push cars, where he can either push it himself, be pushed around, or scoot in it (he's still too short to scoot himself).
