DS2's 3rd b-day is fast approaching and we have an evaluation scheduled
in a couple weeks. Right now he has a speech therapist coming to the
house once a week for 45 min. The speech therapist mentioned a few weeks
ago that DS has made good progress and he could 'pass' his evaulation.
I'm sorry, but I'm going to be pissed if he passes!
Yes, he has
made GREAT strides in his expressive language in the last year. At the
beginning of 2 he had no word for DH or DS, he could only say 'meow' for
the cat and 'choo choo' for train. Basically he could say 'Momma' and
'No'. Now he can clearly say 'Daddy', 'Heo' for Theo, 'Maggie', 'Mormer'
for Mortimer the cat, and approximations for 'brother' and 'sister'. He
had a language explosion in July after the baby was born. BUT there is
still SO MUCH that he says that we can't understand. Also he is dropping
the ending sounds of almost all words. I'm really happy with the
progress he has made, but I'm afraid if he passes the evaluation that he
will either plateau or, worse, lose the progress he has made. Also as he fast approaches the terrible 3's he is becoming super frustrated when he says things and we don't understand him or can't figure it out through process of elimination.
I've
been stressing for weeks about this. I feel terrible hoping that he
fails, but I want him to continue to receive services. He qualified for
one occupational therapy consult, which happened early in the summer. I
ordered some teething toys for him and we've had him using straws and
all kinds of other things to help him work the muscles in the back of
his mouth to help with his eating (visual food sensitivity) and his
speech delay. Recently I've noticed he chews on all kinds of crazy
things, like DVDs, metal space ships, leather piggy banks, etc. I have
to keep an eye on him when he watches tv because he will chew on random
things so I switch them with his teething toys. I can't help but think
this is somehow tied into his speech thing.
Anyway, I'm rambling,
but I was hoping for insight from anyone who may have experience with
EI. My understanding is that if he does fail (fingers crossed) that at 3
they switch from home visits to group settings.
Thanks for listening.

The only piece of advice I'd give is to discuss your concerns with your worker. Parent feedback is a significant part of any IEP/ ISP and your comments should be taken into account in the final eval. And, there's absolutely nothing wrong with hoping he "fails." You want him to have every opportunity to succeed and you feel like the services will help him do so. Nothing wrong with that!
