Heavy Bleeding/Cramping/Passing Clots after D&E?

I had a D&E Friday morning after an ultrasound confirmed at 9 weeks that our twins had stopped growing early on (4-5 weeks).  I guess I was under the misconception that after the D&E, I might have some moderate spotting but that the bleeding wouldn't be too bad.  The first day after the D&E, I had just very minor spotting.  By the next day, it had turned into a light period, which turned into a medium-flow like period.  Last night (Tuesday), I thought the bleeding was slowing but then this morning it unleashed and I had 2-3 hours where I was bleeding very heavily. I also was having severe cramping and eventually passed a large clot and a few other smaller clots.  The cramping has gotten better since then and the bleeding is back down to moderate.

I called the doctor after passing the clots and he told me to relax, drink water, and wait 2-3 hours to see if the bleeding got better.  I'm glad that it has, but seriously... I was no expecting this at all!  I am really hoping that the bleeding and cramping will just keep getting better now and I can put this behind me.

Have any of you experienced heavy bleeding/cramping/passing clots after a D&E?  I'm not sure how common it is for this to happen.  If you did, I'm just wondering how soon afterwards your bleeding stopped.

Re: Heavy Bleeding/Cramping/Passing Clots after D&E?

  • I don't recall having large clots. I did have some small clots off & on. With my last d&c I had minimal to no bleeding the first couple of days, then I had a light-moderate flow for a few days and finally just moderate spotting. I had bleeding/spotting for 2wks after.

  • I didn't have large clots, but I bled medium flow (old blood) for two straight weeks after. Sorry you are dealing with this
