(Not sure if I Should post this here) My friend/coworker has been TTC for about 6 months now. She went to the Dr. Yesterday and got diagnosed with this. I see a lot of signatures on the bottom with this and many of you are pregnant! Any suggestions/encouragement I can give my friend. Thanks!!!

Re: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

  • Just wish her luck with whatever it takes. Everyone has some kooky advice or tips and it can be incredibly frustrating to be told things like relax, take a vacation, try clomid, have you tried temping, hips up after sex, etc etc etc. There isn't anything that works for everyone every time, or even most people. If you wind up with a seriously difficult case it can be years and years of people without medical degrees giving advice they mean to be helpful but which really doesn't apply to you.

  • Lurking over here, but the thing to realize is that PCOS is not a reproductive death sentence. A lot of people hear "you will never get pregnant without intervention" when what's going on is "you may require medical intervention to get pregnant, you may not, we don't know."

Hopefully her doc will check for insulin resistance or anything else that needs to get under control. Other than that, charting (only charting your basal body temperature, not one of those charts that averages your cycle)/temping/OPKs are all good. You can still ovulate and get pregnant with PCOS. Trying to pinpoint ovulation is one of the best proactive steps a person can take in their TTGP journey. Maybe send her to the Fertility Friend website, if she charts she can figure out if she is ovulating or is having annovulatory cycles. Send her to the Trying to Get Pregnant board here, they're full of really good information.

Also, if your friend is under 35, it can take a healthy couple up to a year to get pregnant. If she's ovulating with any regularity, she has a shot, but with perfect timing there's only a 20% chance every month. It's why timing is so important. If she's tracking or being monitored and is not ovulating on her own, that's when it's time to seek intervention.

TTC for 4 yrs & I have horrible PCOS. I don't know her beliefs but prayer works. Also I found a high risk ob doctor who was able to control my pcos. My right ovary was completely polycystic & my left started to become polycystic.

Ps: I am 12 wks today and my LO is measuring 12 wks & 2days. My prayers are with her.
  • Thanks Ladies, I will let her read these. She is waiting for her period and then she is to take a glucose test I believe!

  • i have insulin resistant PCOS (dx at 15).  we tried for a year to get pg on our own after 9 years on the pill (which was my "treatment").  when nothing happened, and charting showed that i only ovulated twice in that time, we went to see a reproductive endocrinologist, which is the only kind of doctor i recommend to treat PCOS. he started me on the lowest therapeutic dose of metformin (which shocked my OB when she read it) and 2 (admittedly long) cycles later i was pg.  DS is now 13 months, and we just got a surprise BFP after 1 pp period while still BFing.  long story short- PCOS is not a fertility death sentence, but every case is different.  have her do her research and find a thorough, reputable doctor who will treat her case uniquely.

So did prayer fix it or your doctor?

PCOS is not determined by cysts alone. I have cysts but my blood work is perfect. My RE said that was not an appropriate diagnosis for me. High risk OBs are not trained in non pregnancy hormone issues.

I'm pretty sure prayer played a factor so judge me...and I disagree with you about high risk ob doctors not being trained in non pregnancy hormones. All the gyns I have been to specialize in high risk obstetrics dx me with pcos & it wasn't just based off cyst on my ovaries. 8-X

My obgyn started me on metformin since I can't take birth control ( a lot of docs try that first). Congrats!!!☆★☆

No, they aren't actually unless they are also RE's that are not currently practicing in that area. They get zero education in fertility.

But tell yourself whatever you want. It doesn't make you right.

Lmao...you always make it seem (by your post) that you're just the smartest & always right...

When you become an MD..be sure to let me know....

  • It's sad how you have to judge me or my religion. It just shows how unhappy you are within..ill pray for you since (in your words) I'm a stereotypical "christian".
  • I'm just popping in to say that this is one of the areas GhostMonkey is very well-versed in, best not to argue with her because she is right.
  • I could care less what she is and isn't educated about. Is she or he an MD? I don't think so. I'm not going to not defend my intelligence nor my religion. Also who's to say what religion I am just b/c I pray.
  • I had two children without any issues then when my youngest turned 3 all hell broke loose. I bled constantly dropping clots down my pants and everything for 40 days. Didn't leave my house for a month because I was afraid of bleeding through my pants in public. Two ultrasounds, a biopsy, 2 pelvic exams, a CT scan and numerous doctors appointments later it was decided that I had developed pcos. I had to take pills to stop the bleeding. I was told that it would be incredibly difficult for me to conceive, pretty much impossible. So I went off BC thinking that no more hormones would help me lose weight. DepoProvera seriously messed with me... 14 months later here I am, 8 weeks pregnant. Sometimes unexpected things happen.

Well, I am glad you do care, you should.
  • I have PCOS and had a surprise pregnancy.  Our baby is due on our wedding day (which is getting rescheduled, of course).  Of course, we are thrilled because we were not sure what lay ahead for us in terms of pregnancy.

I was taking low-dose bc pills at the time, but had gone off of them the month before for dental surgery.  I read somewhere that a person with PCOS could "jumpstart" ovulation by going on bc pills for a short time period.  Perhaps, that is what happened with me.

  • just to add my two cents... i firmly believe prayer played an enormous part in my getting pregnant (both times), and God is the only reason i didn't lose my son before we even knew we were pregnant.  i was about to start a round of provera to jump start my period after a 50 (ish) day cycle so we could get started on a new cycle to try clomid.  i had blood work done to make sure i wasn't pg, and when it was negative, i filled the rx for both meds.  i put off taking the provera because something in me told me i shouldn't take it.  a few days later, my chart showed i O'ed.  i waited until i could test and it came back positive.  i am so grateful God spoke into my heart to keep me from taking the provera.

with that being said, my RE was the reason i was able to get pregnant in the first place.  do i believe God worked through him to get us our son?  yes.  but, God doesn't just do everything for us.  i researched, read, and sought out the best RE in my area.  i made sure i was informed in the care i was receiving, and made sure i was an active participant in his plan for us trying to get pregnant.  i absolutely do not think i would have my son right now if i hadn't pulled my weight, not done my research, and sought care through an ob/gyn instead.  my m/w openly admitted to me that she had no idea what the information on my chart meant when i showed it to her, and that she never would have known to treat me with metformin the way my RE did.  ob/gyn's and m/w's are awesome at keeping an eye on the timer once you've got a baby in the oven, but they have no idea what they're doing in the kitchen.

  • I have PCOS and it took us a little over two years to get pregnant.  Mainly because I wasn't ovulating on my own.  When they finally increased my dose of Metformin to 1500 mg, I started having long cycles on my own.  What really helped me is acupuncture.  I did two failed treatment cycles and ended up getting pregnant naturally right after at treatment cycle.  I know PCOS manifests differently in different people and different things work for different people!

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago. I was immediately put on birth control and also metformin because i was insulin resistant as well. The treatments were not really helping so eventually i kind of just gave up. Then about a year ago, I was having sever left side pain and did an ultrasound to find out I have cysts on my left ovary. We decided that i had failed other treatment that surgery was the best option, I had a cyst removal in September of 2012 and by June of 2013 the cyst had come back but twice as bad. We then decided that it was time for the ovary to be removed. So June 27 2014 i had surgery and had my left ovary and fallopian tube removed. I still hadnt had regular periods and didnt think that conceiving would ever happen. Well it turns out that I was pregnant. Again I had surgery on June 27th and I was pregnant in August. It was the greatest news that i could have every expected.
